MORE questions about rye grain........
    #7906247 - 01/20/08 04:02 PM (16 years, 12 days ago)

Hey everybody I was wondering what everyone thought about growing rye grain in pint jars instead of quarts (I plan on following Magash's tek)......the reason Im wondering all this is because I am a BIG germophobe (and perfectionist) when it comes to growing and even though it would take more work since I had more jars, would the work be worth it to be able to control contamination a little more or would all this be overkill & pointless?? Also since I have never grown w/ grain (only cakes) has anyone had any really good results with certain strains on rye grain??

If you plan on spawning to a bulk substrate, you'll need more of your jars to spawn, and risk more contamination in the spawning progress. I would just go with quarts.

I've never had a strain issue on grain.

Good luck.

Thats true man I didnt even think about that......I just figured that if I did get contam's it be a only a pint jar being lost to the cause instead of a quart know what I mean? But I guess I would risk less contam using less jars(duh).......thanks man I really appreciate it

If you're worried about cost-effectiveness, then try WBS for grain. it's so cheap that you wouldn't dare cry over a lost jar.

You do have a point, isolating contams in a smaller volume jar is great, but you're sacrificing yield with these smaller jars as well. As long as you focus on sterility, you'll be fine.

Best of luck.

Would you really sacrifice yield by using smaller jars.....I figured that it would be around the same, just a lil more work involved in casing

I use half pint jars for g2g. One half pint jar does well for 2-3 quart jars, which will spawn enough sub for a good size mono tub or a couple fc's worth of casing trays.
