Hey, I'm wondering about Mushrooms and houseplants?
    #7906056 - 01/20/08 02:54 PM (16 years, 12 days ago)

I was reading up on outdoor cultures, and I was wondering cause I have huge potted plants, Could I possibly Put a large amount of mycelium in the ground could it constantly grow shrooms? And since the dirt is how it is, I'd mist(or water) every once in a while.

Could it work? Growing mushrooms in houseplant pots with the plants?

people have successfully grown in houseplants before. nothing says you cant try.

thing to remember is moisture and temperature.. and if theres a nutritious substrate they should be fine. well if they dont contaminate of course. but do a search on here you should be able to find something about it.

peace

you have to think about conditions. to my knowledge, cubes (and all mushrooms i gues) start fruiting under specific conditions. thats why in fl, you go looking for mushrooms right after rain. its not that it rains, then the spores germinate, mycelium colonizes, and mushrooms grow, all in one day. the mycelium was already there, you follow?

i live in long island and i tried this with about 1lb of colonized hpoo. my home stays around 70 degrees even in winter but the air is as dry as oprah's vajayjay. also, i forgot about it and never misted it or anything. nothing happened, didnt even see myc grow. maybe if i dug down id see some, but probably not.

however, there was this one dude who planted mycelium in his maple tree (or something) pot and it would not stop flushing. the potting mix was fortified with hpoo, mind you, so the myc spread. he started the thread to ask how to kill the cubes, i think, because he couldnt get rid of them. they even sporulated and starting growing in his other houseplants, which also had hpoo rich potting mixes. the mushrooms and flushes were small, but reportedly very potent.

im pretty sure this was in fl. ill try to find the thread though. bottom line, his house had optimal fruiting conditions. if your house is basically an fc, yeah shrooms will grow great.

I've posted dozens of pictures of mushrooms in houseplants over the years, both indoors and out. Here's a couple. It's not a good growing method, but more of a way to dispose of extra or contaminated substrates. You don't 'time' the flushes, but simply take what comes. I'll move this over to cultivation.

Cool, Is there anything I should at to the house plant soil to encourage growth? Should I water or mist? Do the roots mind each other? How about risk of worms?

Hunting I've found the most growth within 10 feet radius of trees. Therefore you want to treat these muchrooms the same! As if they are wild. The roots will grow towards water, but the mycelium will grow regardless if water near the top soil is available. So misting would be fine. Slugs you need to worry about, but house plants - no way. It's just no the best environment but as the picture show it can be done.
