All this recent talk of backup systems...

With all the recent threads talking about the different elaborate backup systems used by our tech savvy Shroomerites, and then Diploids disastrous crash and successful recovery yesterday, I was wondering if I am still in the dark ages here.
First of all, I don't use my computer for anything related to work. Mainly it is just used for entertainment purposes and on-line access. The only data that I even care about is a small handful of documents and my library of digital photographs (even 99% of the music I have on my drive I own on CD already). These irreplaceable things I keep backed up on both an external hard drive as well as burned onto a library of dataDVDs.
I've never had a hard drive fail. But I seem to buy/build a new machine every few years or so when the old one is getting obsolete. When I do this I just start from scratch and load all my backed up data onto the new machine and continue on as if nothing ever happened.
So I'm assuming that all of you who have these elaborate backups have much more to lose then I do. And maybe I am not seeing the big picture here, but is there something else a guy like me should be doing to protect his data? I have all my stuff backed up...twice. And as long as I don't get lazy and forget to do it manually every so often then I won't ever lose it, right? Anytime I shoot pictures that are important to me I back them up right away, and same goes for important documents.
So, other then being somewhat archaic and doing it manually, am I missing something? I'm not the most tech-savvy guy (this forum usually makes me feel pretty stupid) but I manage my way around most things with a little effort. But somehow I just don't see the need for an elaborate backup system, at least not in my case.

I do everything manually as well. Everything that I don't want to lose is backed up. If the hard drive that contains my OS goes down, I'll get a new hard drive and re-install it. No big deal.
I have a TB of external hard drives that are only on when I'm backing up, once it's done, they are turned off. Whenever I download a new album or new video, I organize on my main hard drive and then copy and paste it in to the same folder on the external backup. Takes what, a minute?
For my budget, it's the easiest way to go...

You backup to an external harddrive and burn it on DVD. That is a pretty elaborate backup system
The only thing you could change is to make the backup process to your external harddrive automatic on scheduled times. And maybe upload your pictures to Google webalbums or Flickr.
You are in the digital age and have a better backup system than most people.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I suppose I just never thought of it as "elaborate" because I've always attacked the problem manually and never tried to automate it in any way. I started out years ago burning on CDs, went to DVDs when it finally became an option, and just recently added the external hard-drive to the mix.

I'd add that creating an image of a freshly installed, configured and updated system, regardless of OS, always makes recovery much less painful.

I should have done that with my system, but two weeks of running it, fucking x-fi card breaks.
I messed up my registry with a badly done crack of some game, so I'll get it reinstalled again. IT's not as if installing windows and all the drivers take long with some of these modified, unattended xp iso's.
And there's always the linux partition.
