Hello. I just have a quick question.
I attempted to cultivate mushrooms a little more than a year ago using PF TEK but no pc; contamination is all i ended up with. I now have a pc and so i was wondering if you guys think i will have better luck because of this
Thanks

I didn't use a PC for over a year and had quiet good luck. But from time to time, contamination was a pain in the ass. Anyway, after I got my PC I had exactly ZERO contamination, so it really pays off. You should reconsider your way of "working", when all jars got contaminated but a PC will definitely help you, to succeed!

its not how you sterilized, its your sterile technique when you noc them up.. I NEVER use a pc unless I am doing grain... for pf teks, you can boil for an hour, and they will be cool... I NEVER have contams from boiling... about 1 in 200 will get contams... and thats not from the sterilizing, its because I dont have a flow hood or glove box... If you are clean and careful, you should have no problems with contamination if you are boiling pf tek jars...

Though a PC isn't necessarily needed for the PF tek (which is known), I have WAY better results, since I use a PC (even when using the PF tek)! My house definitely didn't get any cleaner (maybe my tek has advance a bit, yeah) but the circumstances are the same, except for the PC.
Anyway, as I said, if all he achieved is contaminated jars, he should work over his tek in general!

thats right.... carelessness in your sterile technique is exactly what caused this... maybe you have a contaminated syringe or something?

Well, depending on the quality of rye you get you may need to preasure cook, re-soak and re-dry and pc again...
Sometimes the endospore content is way, way way to high for a single preasure cook cycle to kill everything even after a 36 hour soak...
as for pfcakes, easy stuff man. A pc will fully sterilize them in a hour without a problem. If you get contams it's because of something you did during the inoculation/transfer or it can happen if you remove your pc from the stove before it cools down, it will suck in alot of air.

Yeah, that's what he said. Guess saying that grain sometimes actually needs more than one run in the PC, includes, that using a normal pod, would be a waste of time...

if you followed the pf tek and still contaminated without a pc than something else was wrong. Getting a pc probably will not help it

explain followed teh pf tek to us. 1/2 pint wide mouth jars? brf/vermiculite?> metal lids with 4 small holes in them? wiped sides of jars? clean vermiculite layer? cooked for an hour, no more, no less? good syringe? Left jars alone for a month after inoculating them? DIdnt tip jars upside down?
If you said no to any of those questions than it was most likely you that fucked up

Thanks for all the responses. One thing I want to clear up a little; I am not fully sure if all jars got contam, however, I know that I am going to have to be a lot cleaner this time around.
>>>Tahoe - I DID NOT let the jars sit for a month. After about three weeks I emptied them all out into the garbage and put everything in storage.

youll definately get help from using a pressure cooker. any piss poor pressure cooker is 10 times better than a pot of water.
and youll really want to work on your sterility when inoculating. thats like the #1 problem people have.
