Shiitake Debate

So if given a choice what would you prefer? A shiitake strain that had spores that would fruit reliably but maybe not as well vs a strain that had spores that refused to fruit but fruited very well.

wow settle down
anyways, i think the original poster is saying this
would you rather have a shiitake strain that can have babys(giving you the possibility to find new better strains)
or would you prefer to have just one shiitake strain, that could never have babys, and your stuck with it for life
I would go with babys, eventually your strain will degrade

Isolating a good fruiting shiitake strain from spores is quite a challenge. If someone already has a very nice fruiting culture such as the 75 strain from alohamedicinals, that would be my preferred route. RR

The sentence makes sense. Sorry if you couldn't keep up :P. And Makaveli explained it a little better thanks.
From the moment I heard that shiitake spores are prone to producing fruit-less strains it made me question the biological aspects of this. It just makes my brain hurt to think of a organism putting all this work into something that is in effect sterile and won't propagate the species. Any questions or comments upon why this could be?
I realize that there are some dominant strains out on the market but that it's hard to get a fruiting strain from spores. Is this intentional by the companies?

could just be a bacterial or such that isn't present unless in the wild.
i mean shiitake are growing in the wild right? so its pretty mush gotta make good spores somehow

Shiitake is such an aggressive colonizer, it might have been natures way of making sure they didn't take over the whole forest, thus eating all the available food, and then dying out. Who knows?
I know I've isolated dozens of shiitake strains from spores, as well as used massive multispore inoculations, and so far, none have produced fruits. After awhile, I said the heck with it and just use my commercial cultures to ensure I get fruits. That could help explain why a good shiitake strain master slant will set you back $100 or more. RR

I guess I'll accept all the horrible news and finally just accept the fact that my shiitake aren't going to give me spores that I can grow out . Guess I'll have to try my hand at cloning.
Quick question for all that have invested in master slants: I know that RR is a big fan of grain and grain to grain transfers as a method to bulk up the amount of mycelium he has. And THEORETICALLY this can go on forever, but realistically about how long does a master slant last you before you have to get a new master slant?

i knew the sentence sort of made sence but it was written worse than even I write.

im going to guess your master slant will outlast your interest in this hobby, which i mean by that is you take care of it and you'll have it for many many years.
you take your master slant, take a little piece out and throw on some agar....that agar you just made should last you at least a year unless you make 10 jars a day or something
but first thing i would do if i bought a $100 slant would be to make about 8 agar "backups" and hide them in various places, maybe dig a hole in the back yard and make a time capsule or 2
as to how many times you can "transfer" or "spawn" i think the number was 8 or 10?? im not really sure thow

I make slants once a year, but always keep the old ones for another year as insurance. The slants with wood will last for several years. Those without wood might not even last a year if they dry out.
There is no limit on the amount of transfers. The limit is on how many times the mycelial line can divide cells. RR
