New to growing mushrooms need some help.
    #7904030 - 01/19/08 11:18 PM (16 years, 13 days ago)

Like the thread title says, I'm new to growing mushrooms and new to these forums. I am looking to start growing mushrooms but I don't know a reliable place that I can buy the spores from. Can anyone link me a few web sites that they have bought spores from before and know to be reliable? I need a website that ships to the US. Also what do you guys think is the easiest way to grow mushrooms if your doing it for your first time? I looked into the jar method but I'm not sure if thats the easiest. So if anyone can link me some instructions to the methods that you find easiest I would appreciate it a lot.

Any tips appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for those names, I'll take a look at them for sure. I see that there are many choices for spores though, anyone try a particular kind that they thought was really good for growing and that was really potent?

potency depends on how you grow them. dont worry about that for now. just learn the basics. try any P. Cubensis strain

this is a big debate... in my opinion, strain AND substrate will make or break potency and flushes.. but some strains are more resilient than others.. for your first time, go with any Ps. cubensis strain... they are all good, except for a few novelty strains (like penis envy)...

Puerto Rican, Ecuador, and most of the thai strains seem to be very good flushers and seem to be great on potency, based on multispore incoculation... if you isolate a strain on agar (or preferred medium), and grow on a bulk substrate, then you will have good flushes out of these strains (and many other ps. cubensis strains) along with good potency...

although this kind of BS is in the future.. lol... you can still have decent amount of fun with just pf style cakes... if you can, viddy RogerRabbit's video "Let's Grow Mushrooms" or check out the grow archives...

you will learn the difference between multispore inoculation and isolation of mycelium on agar, but for now, just get a spore syringe, and follow the most basic of all teks.. the PF tek... its sssssooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo easy...

lol,it looks pretty hard from where I stand right now but once I take the time to learn everything and do the steps slowly it should get easier. I was looking at buying this spore, what do you guys think?

GT's or Cambo's are the best for beginners IMO

There is no good "beginner" cubensis strain IMO. They all just have minor different characteristics. Golden teachers are fine. Go for it.

GT is grrreeatt! very nice strain... but kinda lacking on the fruiting side... but with what it lacks in fruitbodies, it makes up for in weight.. usually a few big fruits... not a very prolific fruiter in my opinion... strong though... for sure a good grow with a fun night waiting at the end... I just like big flushes, so I am not too down with this strain... it has proven itself, though, through trial, and still is one of the more popular strains to cultivate..

and follow the pf tek to a tee... if you follow the tek is it's entirety, then you will succeed... its very simple, and anyone can do it.. as long as you can read, you will have shrooms....

this is a great hobby, and you will for sure fall in love 10 times over once you get a flush... just read, ask, and listen, and you will not fail...
