Does the temperature that a mushroom grows in affect their potency? I know that heat is bad for storing and drying them, but I haven't seen anything about growing temps. degrading it's potency.

i think RR said that he grew some in 85f to 90f temp range and they lacked potency. i've grown from 65f to 80f and didn't notice a difference.

I remember reading something like that about a year or two ago, someone said not to store them in high temps. and and I also remember alot of talk about avoiding heat when you dry them. If this is wrong, then I'm sorry about that.

probley something about using an oven on high heat to dry them. i've heard that it causes them to lose potency.

Actually, you should have looked it up:
http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_chemistry.shtml
428F is the minimum temperature that breaks down psilocybin. Psilocin, on the other hand is much less stable and begins breaking down quickly after picking the mushrooms, so the best way to avoid that problem is to eat them fresh.

the only way that you will break down active alkaloids is to dry them using alot of heat, i.e. drying them in an oven... just make a drying box with a fan in it, then use some damprid.. that will get them as dry as a 97 yr old hooke.. I mean.. umm... it will dry them, without losing potency... fresh shroomies are wonderful, though...
the growing temp will totally affect how fast they grow, but the only way that the incubation or fruiting temp will affect the mycelium, when it comes to potency, is the fact that you will not get full colonization, due to contam or otherwise... like thermal death..
incubate at room temp, and you will be fine... 70-85 will work fine.. temp for incubation is not critical in the sense that it will just take longer, but you risk germination of enemy spores before you have a solid mycelium network, which leads to contamination of your jar..
on the other hand, if you incubate at too high a temp, you will not only slow growth and provide a perfect condition for contams, you might just cause thermal death of the mycelium, which results in a dead cake....

Bottom line...potency is not affected due to temp variation? Mmmmmm...? Which leads me to another question regarding a cooking recipe. I'll post separately.
