Your thoughts please, if you have any.
    #7902716 - 01/19/08 05:50 PM (16 years, 13 days ago)

The moral idealist will always loose to the man of passion, commitment and goal. A man who loves his work is a rare man indeed and he will always triumph over the moral man-the man who does his work for the "right" reasons

What does this mean... to you.

Were not talking about an actual competition. I'm just interested in people's reactions to this statement.

The always is very important here as is identifying the idealist with the moral man... do you still agree?

Well, yeah - depending on how you define life in terms of losing and winning.  I admire people who love what they do and I enjoy being one of those people.  That's not to say that people with passion who aren't afraid to act on it are without morality.. though, some sure are :eyebrow:

You are assuming that a moral idealist goes against his nature. A moral idealist can be driven by "passion commitment and goal" which is given a whole new level by the complete conviction that it is the right thing to do.

A moral idealist can love his work for more reasons, thus have more reinforcements in place, thus be more driven to give it his absolute very best.

You are assuming that a moral idealist isn't driven by his love and passion but does things because of a rationale. That often isn't the case. Moral idealists tend to be driven by passion and have the moral/idealist rationale to fortify this effect.

If you love to do something and consider it right on every possible level then you are far better motivated than if you merely love to do something.

A man working for the right reasons may be less likely to neglect other things in his life, like family, than a man who is committed to his work as you described.

I don't think Work = Job in this statement.

Probably closer in meaning to life. Maybe those works that increase and expand one's quality of life... maybe...

I'm asking this question because i was asked it myself and I'd like to see this community's take on it.

Seems like it's an ideal vs. passion type of question.

Passion has the ability to cause singlemindedness more that idealism I'd say.  Also can cause someone to devote more time and mental energy towards a project.  If you are passionate about something you'll be thinking about it and problem solving even when you aren't actually doing the work.

Whereas doing a good job just because it's the right thing to do, makes a situation where it's ok to fail.  You know, "Well I did the best I could".

If you're really passionate about something failure isn't an option you're willing to accept.

I'm not sure you can necessarily divorce those two types of personality. Often the moral idealist is passionate about his ideas, just as much as the man who does his work for the "right" reasons is commited passionately to those reasons.

To me, this means you have yet to grasp that morality doesn't exist as a universal law. What are the "right" reasons?

I can't get the difference between them sharp enough to make a statement.
Morals and ideals can be absolute parts of of a mans committed and passionated goal (and vice versa) - both can be wrong
