Azureescens jar to first spawn on chips question?
    #7900331 - 01/19/08 03:09 AM (16 years, 13 days ago)

My 1/2 pint jars are moving along but slow. Is there any drawbacks to adding my jars to bags of sterilized chips earlier than the jars being 100% colonized? I'd say there at about 70% as of now. Will the extra uncolonized Brf in the jars rot mixed into the bags of chips? Thanks

azurescens are a slower colonizer than cubensis, it does take longer. its best to hold out till 100% because uncolonized sections will contam.
and what do you mean by sterilized chips? arent you just trying to spawn to chips? i wouldnt think they need be sterile. someone correct me if im wrong please.

The first spawn is on soaked chips that have been sterilized in spawn bags from there the second spawn to more chips can be just soaked not sterile. Once they have established themselves on the first spawn of chips they are hardier and more resistant to contamination.

yea they are different that spawning with cubes.
i would think that youd have to pasteurize the chips. not sterilize them. but then again its a whole new process.

In my experience Azures aren't a slower colonizer than cubes. Actually they were a lot faster than most cube strains I've "worked" with.
They take quiet a long time to germinate but once they did, they're extremely fast!

It's VERY important to let the substrate colonize completely before you spawn them to wood chips! If not, the chance of contamination is A LOT higher!
When the jars are colonized completely, wait for another one or two weeks, THEN spawn to 24 hours soaked hard wood chips. You don't no sterility for that. Just use a flower box or something like that and put a paper towel over it. It'll take the wood chips to fully colonize about one and a half months. Right after that you can put them outside.

You can also spawn them directly to an outdoor wood chip bed, without the step of previous wood chip colonization. This step should be taken in April or may, when the frost is gone completely!

do not put uncolonized grain in wood chips!!!!!
Wait until its colonized and then just mix them up.
They will grow pretty nicely once ON chips
