hey, Im just about to start a 10 jar set of amazon, and I was wondering a couple things, since I lost my grow kit when i moved.
1. would a 50w fish tank heater submersed under a few inches of mineral water in the bottom of my cooler work to keep it humid enough? (since vap. pressure would rocket)
2. what about gas exchange?
3. any specific lighting you guys can recommend me?
4. with the above method, would I really need a dripshield?
pic of heater:

thanks for tips in advance. any other etc. tips anyone wants to throw in are helpful as well.

just take a trip to a thrift shop and pick up a shitty humidifier, thats what i did when i started just so i didn't really have to worry about FAE. if thas too much just use perlite and fan a lot, either way its going to be under 10$. the light isn't important any light will do its job to a degree

damn, canNOT find a humidifier around here... only like a huge one at wallymart for ~ $130... will a heater + water level work to keep up RH? I was thinking of a setup like below. I would put hole on bottom right above water level and a hole higher up for air intake. One top/one bottom for each of the two shorter sides of the box (left and right) and two top/ two bottom for each of the longer sides (face and back)
the caulk would not be attached to the lip as I would need to open the lid for harvesting and checking, but I would caulk all around the side in a lip flush with the top, so that the lid would make a better seal.
alternativly, I could try to find a big ass rubbermaid box and do the same (with no caulk) or just use perlite and drill more holes. gimmie gimmie gimmie some input!!!! note: i would prefer to use first method because of the added heat bonus as i live in a coold northern canadian climate and it gets fairly cool in my house at night.

I just bought a bunch of computer chassis fans. The older, 5v sort. I'm going to hook two a piece to 12v adapters and install them on the sides of my fc.

You should not need to put a heater in your FC..... Use damp perlite..Also you can buy 30 dollars humidifiers at walmart along with ultrasonic humidifiers. Using computer fans on your fc not that great of an idea. Fan's are electric and with 90+ humidity well electricity + water = problems

I'm not putting the fan in the humidity, or water for that matter.

Yeah however you will still be sucking the water vapor threw the fans. Eventually they will quit working I would think. I didn't mean you would literally place it in standing water.

Go to the pharmacy in Wal-Mart for a humidifier. Vicks or other brand.

I think you may be over thinking this.
1-75qt. tub, clear = $11.00 2-bubble stones = $ 1.25 2-air line tees = $ 1.25 1-1/4" air line = $ 3.50 1-fish tank air pump = $ 6.00 1-fish tank heater = $ 5.00 (optional if house is 68F) 1-bag fish tank gravel = $ 2.00 1-bag of perlite = $ 6.50 1-quart jar or similar container = $ 1.00
Drill a hole in the side of the tub big enough to insert the heater cord & air line. Rinse the perlite (if there is sphagnum in it it will not hurt anything) & pour it over the bottom of the tub. Run a section of hose into the tub, tee it to both stones. Place the jar in the middle of tub, drop the stones in along with heater, cover with gravel, & then fill with water. Drop in your cakes on their lids or a piece of foil.
Note: I tried to incubate BRF cakes by placing jars in a tub keeping them warm with heated water. I lost almost 75% of product to contamination because of water from condensate seeping into the air exchange holes.
