I'm still pretty new and researching all I can. I've got some rye jars about 60% colonized in my incubator and about to do some more. I got some tyvek today I was gonna use for lids but I really don't understand the purpose it serves. If someone could clarify this for my and possibly throw in some tips I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

its a filter. its filters up to 5 microns i believe and it wont let anything bad in your jars unless you let it. i actually use two pieces of tyvek as my lid now. works great!

what are you using for lids on your grain jars?
tyvek is basically a breathable filter used on jar lids and other things to block contaminations
there are a few good teks and posts on how to create proper jar lids, i personally use tyvek squares, micropore tape, and silicone sealant for self healing injections but there are a thousand ways to do it

I'm just using an alluminum layer, the lid, the ring and 2 more layers of alluminum. I incubate at 80 degrees with no contaminations. Gotta love the glovebox. But I am interested in using tyvek to avoid any possible future contaminations. You say you use tyvek squares. But do you use the metal lid is basically my question. If so under or ontop of the tyvek?

no offense shroober to each his own but i like to keep mine simple. two pieces of tyvek and when i inoculate i put a piece of duct tape from one end of the top to the other. this keeps the air flow down inside the jar to keep the top layer of grain from drying out and it covers the incoulation hole. also its pretty damn simple and easy.

i drill two holes, one for inoculation and one for air exchange. the inoculation hole i fill with RTV silicone sealant to create a self healing injection port, on the other hole i cut a small tyvek square about 1 inch wide and 1 inch tall and place that on top of the hole in the lid. i then place the micropore tape over the tyvek square which is on top of the lid. the result is a relatively strong filter and a self healing inoculation port to prevent you having to puncture your filter with a needle when inoculating
do a search for jar lids or LC lids and you'll find plenty of pics and techniques
