The methodology is not that difficult. Here are the keys:

1. Forget trying to get from A to Z. Concentrate on going from A to B. Work on postures that will loosen the hips and thighs. Don't practice doing the lotus directly.

2. Practice must be steady and regular.

3. Don't push. Hold your asanas right on the edge of pain. Do NOT be macho; be gentle with your body. Going too far too fast will have a counter-productive effect.

4. Breathe into the areas of greatest tension (i.e. focus your awareness on your knots) and release. Slow and deep breathing is the key. Let go of fear.

If you are young and not obese, most anyone could do that with a few months of steady practice.

Forget any drugs while practicing. Taking valium (or pot or alcohol) is not going to teach you how to truly relax body and mind and will create a false association.

Practice yoga every day.

It depends on what you mean by sane.

Sane for me is breaking out all the windows in my house and burning the carpet to get the demons out. I mean, it worked... so it must have been a reasonable thing to do, right?

What the hell does this have to do with the Lotus Position anyways?
Wait. Are you trying to suggest that the Lotus Position can provide the most torsional rigidity when being dragged behind a car at 50 mph whilst sitting on a homemade skateboard? Maybe, but don't you think that the Lotus Position would require me to direct some of my precious concentration away from holding on to the ski rope and trying not to spill my pint of guinness?

Or was that your poor attempt to burn me because you're still sore from a previous encounter?

I concur, Sclorch is way evil. He's another one that should get the boot for thinking too much.

Plus, he has ugly punctuation.

One of Bill Cosby's funnier routines on an album (1970? - don't remember the title)
is about himself as a kid listening to the "Light's Out" radio show. He gets so sacred that he smears jello on the floor and sets the sofa on fire to keep the monsters away.

I think you should do the "Oprah Show" demonstrating your demon-casting ability...

Swami, that was some great advice for stretching.

When I was in high school, I joined the diving team in 11th grade. When I first joined, I could not even reach down and touch my toes without bending my knees. Stretching and being flexible is very important in the sport of diving, and my coach gave me some advice very similar to what you gave enter.

I began practicing daily at home. I would stretch until it started to get too painful and then hold the stretch for as long as I could. I repeated the same stretches over and over, and by 12th grade I was more flexible than anyone else on the team.

I could sit on the floor with legs extended straight in front of me, toes pointed, and actually hold the tips of my toes for as long as I wanted with my forehead pressed down tight against my knees. I never thought I would ever be that flexible, but the advice you gave to enter surely does work!

Namaste.
