One of the most intense female vocals of all time -- Merry Clayton in Gimme Shelter

get any nina simone, any fiona apple. nina simone is hands down the bestest female vocalist ever. and fiona apple is great, minus all the whiny stuff.

interestingly, I love the female voice, but I never cared for it in music. I prefer to listen to guys who sound like girls, like Cedric of [the] Mars Volta. lolz

Holy shit 3 pages and not a mention yet of
BJORK?!?!?!
-------------------- Q: We wanted to see if you had the ability to expand your mind and your horizons... and for one brief moment, you did. PICARD: When I realized the paradox... Q: Exactly. For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you'd never considered. That's the exploration that awaits you...not mapping stars and studying nebulae... but charting the unknowable possibilities of existence. To carry yourself forward and experience myriad things is delusion. That myriad things come forth and experience themselves is awakening. -Dogen Zenji

Old thread, but a good one!
> Fiona Apple
Heck yea! I just saw her come out for a few songs at a very small theatre (150 seats) here in town, to play with a couple of the players from Nickel Creek. They even brought out John C. Reilly who played and sang some self-coined "hillbilly tunes". Reilly wasn't even on the bill, so it was really neat to see a big hollywood actor comin' out in the midst of such a small venue. But out of 'em all, Fiona had the most impressive powerful vocals by quite a long shot... not that I don't absolutely adore violinist and vocalist Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek, but her voice has a much softer breathy feel to it.
Now, for my submission. If you have a quality audio system that can reproduce high levels cleanly, crank up the attached bluegrass version of Broke-down Palace, performed by Dead Grass featuring Vassar Clements with vocals by Gwen Vaughn. Perhaps it is mostly that I love this beautiful song so much, but I find her voice to have a great deal of power and authority as well.
Play it!

Oh what the hell, I went on about how great Sara Watkins is, and I've really been diggin' her music lately, so here's a sample from her time with Nickel Creek...
Don't let this storage space be used in vain... Play it!
