The Biological Effects of Food
    #7896853 - 01/18/08 10:23 AM (16 years, 14 days ago)

Anyone who thinks they have an answer feel free. Why do some foods tend to make your more full feeling than others? I made split pea soup (with carrots and turnips), and a cup of it will make you feel physically full quickly and for a long time after eating it. The soup is low in calories with nearly no fat and little salt. Other foods I sometimes eat take huge amounts of calories and or fat to produce this feeling, and the the effect is often short lived. If one could focus on these types of foods then ones calorie intake could be more painlessly controlled. I made some vegetable soup a while back with every vegetable that I could find in it (spinach, kale, turnip greens, quinoa, sweet potatoes, potatoes, turnips, peas, green beans, cabbage, and even black eyed peas) that had this same effect. If you know other foods with this effect list them as well!

No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

FIBER!

Quote:

Dietary fiber may promote satiety by slowing gastric emptying, leading to an overall decrease in calorie intake. Foods high in insoluble fiber include whole-wheat breads, wheat cereals, wheat bran, rye, rice, barley, most other grains, cabbage, beets, carrots, Brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower and apple skin.

You can go here
http://www.nutritiondata.com/tools/explorer
and sort foods by "fullness factor". There is also more information on that site as to how they go about calculating that fullness factor. Also known as satiety.

But perhaps your body only says it's truly "full" when both the caloric AND the nutritional needs of the moment are met? Like maybe if you are super low in some vitamin you'll keep feeling hungry until you get it? Or make yourself sick
