n00b ShroomOp, with pics! +Update
    #7895458 - 01/17/08 11:05 PM (16 years, 15 days ago)

Hello all, just wanted to share my first grow with the rest of you. Much thanks to MushroomsRR/Roadkill for uploading their PF tek on youtube.

I went nuts looking for wide-mouthed jars, and two grocery stores later I settled for cheese shakers from the dollar store. I picked up 6 for $6. I used the PF tek ratio on all of them (they were bigger than 1/2 pint so I filled 1/3 of each shaker with dry verm, then my substrate on top of that).

I taped up the shakers with micro-pore tape, then covered in two layers of foil, held in place with rubber bands.

Threw 'em in a boiling pot for 90 mins then noc'ed em up with some Amazonian.

+4 days later I got worried about the breath-ability of the 3M micro-pore tape, which wasn't letting much gas exchange (no signs of myc growth). I took the tape off all of the shakers and put loose foil over the tops. Another +4 days and I'm seeing some myc growth, I'd say about 20% for each jar.

your feedback is appreciated.
will be updating soon!

the shaker glass goes straight up (no shoulders) its just the screw on metal top that is tapered.

So, your dry verm is on the BOTTOM....as in NOT between your inoculation holes and the outside? The dry verm is supposed to act like a barrier between outside contams and th einside substrate. Hope that's myc man

yeah i put a 1/2 inch of dry verm on top as well. The point of the dry verm on the bottom is for filler, seeing as how my jars were more than 1/2 pint.

Well..since there's two barriers, especially the one on the bottom, you might not have enough moisture. The dry vermiculite layer most likely sucked allot of it up.

interesting point. any ideas for adding moisture at this point?
perhaps distilled water in a sterile syringe? However, that would probably fuck with the water levels of the mix.

Well it depends really, if your cakes are a little too dry they'll just take longer to grow. However, if nothing happens at-all, then perhaps you might need to add more water. Unfortunately the procedure to introduce more water could very well cause contamination. Do you have any syringes?

Just wait and leave the bottle alone. Don't try to "add water" after the fact because 1)It messes with the water content and 2)Very likely to introduce contams. Just wait. If they colonize Yay...if not they'll go real slow and you'll learn. If they stall out they'll start to pin and then you birth, wash off uncolonized bit and fruit.

Tapered jars aren't necessary unless you're fruiting straight off the cake  what I do is just take a sanitized knife and cut the cake in half both ways, using latex gloves I just pull out as much mycelium as I can reach and use the knife the get out the rest.

Break up everything add to poo like normal.

I would have left the micro pore over the holes.. or atleast most of them. Leaving them open I imagine might dry out the cake. I dont think the bottom layer of verm is really going to SUCK the water out of your cake.... it will probably just collect excess moisture.

Those shakers are actually a pretty good idea, not tapered and they already have inoculation holes. How much did you pay for those?

They're big, but the vermiculite packing is a great solution! The mycelium really does seem to like the plain vermiculite at the top of the jar, so if it had some to grow into at the bottom, it might be a good sponge to hold moisture later.

Just have to start off with moistened vermiculte when packing them.

It's nice to see someone using their head instead of crying that they can't find jars
