Fun Fact Thread
    #7895084 - 01/17/08 09:39 PM (16 years, 15 days ago)

I'm really bored and decided to start this thread. If you have anything of interest to contribute please do.

1. My first one is GENETICALLY-ENGINEERED HUMANS HAVE ALREADY BEEN BORN
The earthshaking news appeared in the medical journal Human Reproduction under the
impenetrable headline: "Mitochondria in Human Offspring Derived From Ooplasmic
Transplantation." The media put the story in heavy rotation for one day, then forgot about it. We
all forgot about it.
But the fact remains that the world is now populated by dozens of children who were genetically
engineered. It still sounds like science fiction, yet it's true.
In the first known application of germline gene therapy β€” in which an individual's genes are
changed in a way that can be passed to offspring β€” doctors at a reproductive facility in New
Jersey announced in March 2001 that nearly 30 healthy babies had been born with DNA from
three people: dad, mom, and a second woman. Fifteen were the product of the fertility clinic,
with the other fifteen or so coming from elsewhere.

2. Also i have a personal one. If you go to youtube and watch I'm A G music video by N.O.R.E. you will see a girl sitting on the couch towards the end of the video directly left from your point of view of Charlie Murphy. About a year ago i had sex with her. She was also on the 4th of July special of girls next door. Not bragging but pretty cool none the less

In an audiobook I was listening to it said that based on recent research (an audiobook dated 2004) that any individual atom in the body is no older than 9 years old. Even cells that don't reproduce (brain cells) still swap out their contents for fresh stuff occasionally. So the next time you feel "old" you're only 9 years old!

my mistake bout the other 3

VIII. Neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning.
IX. The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God.
X. Thou shalt not seethe a kid [ie, a young goat] in his mother's milk.

Really interesting you should ask that, i was wondering the same thing myself for a few days! Apparently our genetics tell our cells only to duplicate to a certain amount. I haven't done any research, but I'd guess the reasoning behind this is that the gene pool would always have old genetic material in it if the old didn't die, so the only way to ensure a specie's survival would be to eliminate the old genes. Even if they stopped reproducing at a certain age, they would still add extra competition for limited resources (food/water etc.) Thats just my best guess though, could be wrong.

that does however seem to be a very good guess.
there is no species that goes until a certain number and then just stops and lives forever. it must be just that. an overpopulation thing.

i'll bet thats exactly whats up with that.

I'll bet, though, if we do manage to isolate the genes that cause our cells to stop duplicating, and if we try to tinker with them, we'll just end up causing an uncontrollable growth (ie. cancer).

Yeah, apparantly the protons and the neutrons of the atom make up that 1% and the rest is just a cloud of electrons which have no substance. When you sit down on a chair, you're not technically touching the chair, the electron fields are repulsing each other at a minuscule distance.

Sultans who ruled in the Ottoman empire preferred to trust black slave eunuchs with affairs of the state and the running of the harem over white eunuchs, who were notorious for embezzling money and sleeping with concubines. (white eunuchs still had some genitals left, black eunuchs were completely castrated)

Sometimes the jews crucified their own prisoners around the same time that the Romans made it popular.

Napalm was invented at Harvard

the "statistically" happiest country in the world is Bengledesh even though it is one of the most impoverished and has high infant mortality rates.

the man who invented the modern toilet was named Thomas Crapper

wal mart is the 18th biggest economy in the world

less than 1% of all the deaths in world war one were from bayonet wounds.

more than half of the bullets shot in world war one were fired into the air

martin luther king jr plaigerized his doctoral thesis

baby grizzly bears weigh about a 1/2 a pound when they are born

humans and elephants have the longest gestation periods among mammels

Isaac Newton invented the cat flap

I'm not 100% on all of these, but they are things I have heard with some consistency, or facts asserted in books I've read.
