How long without eating does it take....
    #7894859 - 01/17/08 08:41 PM (16 years, 15 days ago)

for the average body to go into starvation mode? I'm dieting/working out and trying to maintain 1,500 calories or less a day. I'll have a big breakfast, an apple or something for lunch, dinner is usually at work so I'll have like a turkey sandwich on whole grain and some fruit, or sometimes I'll have a Healthy Choice or a Lean Cuisine. My problem is towards the end of the night I get extremely hungry, but I don't want to eat a certain time before bed. At the same time I don't want my body to go into starvation mode before I sleep. What kind of intervals are best for dieting? Like how long between breakfast, lunch and dinner, and snacks between?

It's best to eat every 2-3 hours. Even if it's something small.

Don't worry too much about eating before bed... just eat slow-digesting proteins and healthy fats. These will digest slowly while you sleep, keeping nutrients flowing throughout your bloodstream throughout the night.

Eat low fat cottage cheese around the time that you usually go to bed. It contains "casein" protein, which is slow-digesting, and will keep your body in an anabolic state throughout the night.

QFT... along with that, have something like nuts or flax oil. Get some of those essential fatty acids.

Sweet.  I don't really like cottage cheese but I guess a few grapes with it would make it pretty tasty.  I'll have to pick some up   Any preference on nuts?  I'm assuming unsalted, mixed?

Almonds, without question. A good rule of thumb is to eat exactly 24 almonds along with your cottage cheese.

Much better to ditch the big breakfast for a small breakfast with lots of small meals/snacks throughout the day.

I want to throw some tips in here:

1. I eat three normal and balanced meals a day. I don't snack. I listen to my body.

2. Those "Healthy Choice" and "Lean Cuisine" meals aren't good for you. They are full of sodium, preservatives, and all kinds of garbage. "If man made it then don't eat it."

3. You need to eat more fat and protein. For example, get some soy milk, peanut butter, olive oil, fish, etc.. in there. Your body needs fat and it helps to fill you up so you don't feel hungry all of the time.

4. Fat doesn't make you fat....calories do. You can eat a whole bag of "fat free/cholesterol free" Fig Newtons but if the things are 70 calories a piece then you're going to become a lardass in no time.

5. Only eat natural things that have nutritional value (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, etc..). Soda has no nutritional value. Cookies have no nutritional value. Those "healthy" frozen dinners barely have any nutritional value.

Why are you limiting your calories to 1500 a day?

I only burn about 700-1000 calories a day at the gym so I need to be in a caloric deficit, right?  I eat the frozen dinners mostly at work when I really don't have access to fresh food, and I usually can't afford to order any.  I guess I could make more of an effort to pack a lunch more often, but there are the days where there's not much else I can do.  It's either eat healthy choice or starve.

Dump the processed TV dinners. They are garbage. Also 1500 cal a day may be too low to keep the metabolism out of starvation mode. It is better to use exercise to control calories. You can eat more, but burn it off with exercise. This will avoid starvation mode.

But the paninis are so good!   Only 275 calories as well.  If they're as bad as you say they are I won't buy them anymore.  Exercise isn't enough for me though, I need to eat a lot less...that was my problem in the first place.  I can deal with being hungry, it's mind over matter.  I just need to know that my metabolism isn't at a dead halt.

Not enough? What the hell exercise are you doing. I burn 1200 cal a day with running and weights on a normal day. That means that I can eat 2700 calories a day and lose weight faster (if I was the same body weight) than you due to a faster metabolism. Also I won't plateau while at 1500 cal you are already there most likely. Diet is only half of a successful weight loss plan. Exercise is the other half. I have lost over 150 lbs in the last year without starving myself. The principles that I have laid out here are sound. If you are burning 1000 cal a day you need to increase your calorie intake. Also calculate your RMR and base your diet on that.

I run 5-7 miles 5 times a week, along with my diet. I've lost about 40lbs in 2 months, and I think I might have plateu'd. I don't usually do too much lifting, mainly cardio on the elliptical machine (full incline and a resistance of 8).

I highly recommend both increasing your caloric intake AND including some heavy strength training in your routine. Increasing your lean muscle mass will raise your basal metabolic rate.

If you currently work out 5-7 days a week, I'd incorporate a split routine (upper body/lower body) of weight training 6 days per week. Use a weight setting that exhausts your muscles at the end of one set of 10 reps. Focus during your routine, don't just push out the reps without intensity and purpose. Visualize your muscles working.

Cardio is definitely important to weight loss and health, but strength training is equally crucial.

That's good to know, because when I do use the weights, I don't usually get more than 10-15 reps because I use really heavy weights. I thought I was supposed to be doing the opposite and I was about to change it up a bit, but if that's what's best for my situation I'll stick to it! Thanks for all the advice, it's good to have a light on a subject that I'm pretty in the dark about.

Training with heavy weights is best for building mass quickly. It's also a good idea to "rest" by switching to a lighter weight/higher rep routine every 6-8 weeks. This will maintain the mass you've built, and will build up your muscular endurance.

Making up lunches is not a big time sacrifice at all.  I spend about 15 minutes a day making a healthy lunch with fresh foods.

1500 calories is a very small amount for an average sized man, especially if you are that active.  A 180lb male who doesn't exercise at all can burn 2000+ calories a day easily.  If you're weight training I would think you'd want to consume enough to sustain muscle growth. Is this a temporary diet?  I'm just not sure what you're trying to accomplish.
