Caribou, are you familiar with the 2008 cannabis initiative in Calif?
The initiative, if passed, will legalize marijuana for all uses and require California to regulate marijuana similar to how wine is regulated.
If the initiative passes, it may not be sold at gas stations, but it will be sold at liquor stores.

hmm that's interesting.. no I didn't know about that. I highly doubt that'd ever pass though. I wish it would be like that, but I highly doubt it.. that's just what I think.

well first of all im sure that if cannabis were to ever become legal, the government will tax the shit out of it. they still will not allow you to grow your own and deal it. they are going to make you only have probably an ounce on you at one time. they wont allow you to grow your own because that would still be creating a black market and black markets are still illegal. the government would lose money if they would allow people to deal it. how does anyone feel about smoking cannabis while a woman is pregnant? pro or con?

Go here to learn more and volunteer http://www.calhemp08.org/
The initiative provides for full expunging of all marijuana convictions and legalizes it for all purposes. It allows the legislature to impose a tax on marijuana of up to $10 per ounce. I am perfectly happy with that.
Don't dismiss it so fast. California is in a huge budget crunch and this bill reduces the cost of incarceration and law enforcement, provides tax revenue, and dramatically reduces the cost of marijuana. It could easily be an extra $1 billion or more annually for the calif budget.
Money that currently goes to international gangs and criminals would instead go to farmers and legitimate california businesses, further boosting the calif economy. Weed that is smuggled from mexico can be more safely and easily grown by calif farmers, so the calif economy essentially captures the lion's share of the marijuana market nationwide. And it would be the end of the DEA harrassing medical marijuana users in california.
There are lots of good reasons for californians to support the initiative, even if they are personally opposed to marijuana use.
At the national level, if this passes, marijuana will be uncontrollable in comparison to its current uncontrollable state. Drug policies will have to change. It's not exaggerating to say it will be the end of marijuana prohibition here.

No, that's different... mostly just trying to say "hey legalize it, and you get lots of tax revenue". On the other hand, the initiative is a specific effort to fully legalize marijuana in California.
The $1 billion is my (very conservative IMO) estimate of the combined direct savings of releasing marijuana prisoners, eliminating the costs of marijuana enforcement, and tax revenue.
