RCMP dismantle huge ecstasy lab
October 20, 2007 - thestar.com

Stock possibly worth up to $40 million found in east-end home

RCMP drug officers have made a massive seizure of the drug ecstasy in northeast Toronto that could be worth up to $40 million.

While stopping short of confirming it as the largest drug bust in Toronto history, Sgt. Brent Hill, commander of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police chemical diversion unit, said last night: “It’s on the top shelf of large drug busts.”

Hill was speaking in a telephone interview from outside a home on Piper’s Green Rd. in the Finch Ave. E. and Brimley Rd. area where more than a dozen officers dressed in white chemical suits brought out bag after bag of ecstasy tablets and the powder from which they are produced.

“What you have here is a drug lab - there’s probably about 100 kilograms at this location, at 120 to 125 milligrams in a tablet…at minimum, at least a couple million tablets.”

He estimated each tablet would sell on the street for between $8 and $20.

RCMP Supt. Ron Allen said officers raided the premises following a bust in a car that they stopped as part of an ongoing investigation on Friday night. Soon after pulling over the car, investigators surrounded the home, which police said was also a former marijuana grow-op.

Officers entered with a warrant early Saturday morning, where they found the large ecstasy lab. The ecstasy was likely headed for the United States, Allen said. The RCMP investigate national and international drug trading involving Canadians.

“It wasn’t something that we happened to dance across. It was an ongoing investigation,” said Allen, head of the RCMP’s 101-member Toronto Drug Section.

RCMP Clandestine Laboratory Team investigators are sorting through the volatile contents of the house this weekend, under supervision from Health Canada officials. One nearby house has been evacuated this weekend as a precaution, said RCMP Insp. Rick Penny, who is leading the on-site investigation.

“Some of the stuff is really corrosive, or toxic. Acids, solvents - it’s a real mess of stuff,” Allen said. The 125,000 pills “could even be the tip of the iceberg,” as investigators may find more drugs in the house, said Allen, who didn’t visit the site.

Penny described the ecstasy lab as “a significant operation.” Neighbours say the house, where police busted a marijuana grow-op last year, was listed for sale in recent months, but was never sold. Some reported seeing people going in and out of the house, but said no family lived there.

“After the last time, people aren’t quite so shocked,” said one neighbour, who didn’t want to be named. “We don’t need this in our neighbourhood.”

Sgt. Hill said this is the largest seizure Health Canada has made this year. He said another huge problem with these cases is the threat to public safety.

“Drug traffickers are pulling into neighbourhoods and have these makeshift labs in their communities. Precursor chemicals [those used to make drugs such as ecstasy] are flammable and toxic.

“Drug traffickers don’t want to go to jail, so they don’t properly ventilate. There are tragic consequences if these places catch on fire or blow up. It’s a huge public safety problem.”

Toronto residents Yan Shi, 31, Wei Qion Ma, 29, Yao Quan Jian, 20, and Shu Qiang Wu, 37, face charges after the drug seizure. New York resident Wan Shan Ling, 50, was also charged.

That sucks really bad. Hopefully it's not significant enough to bring prices up. Rolls are already too high here.

This article confuses me though. It says that the house was up for sale and neighbors reported that no family lived there. So does that mean that they were running the lab out of an abandoned house?

I promise there are alot more than just that one, the percent of people they actually bust pale in comparison to the amount actually maid out there. At least this article they were correct in the amount they are worth.
