Thanks,

Small amounts of Amanita muscaria, like less than 3 grams twice a week seem to me to be mildy stimulating.
I stopped drinking coffee or anything with caffeine, except chocolate, if I know I'm really going to need to be active I'll eat a couple of grams of Amanita muscaria. I don't think they are good for mental acuity they way caffeine is though, so they would not be a good choice if you needed to study.

Hm....I can't imagine starting every day with a cup of mushroom tea instead of coffee. That would be fucked. Try coca leaves, if you can find them. There are all sorts of cool ethnobotanical stimulants out there. Mormon tea is another. There was this cool stuff I tried in Kenya once called ghat, also a stimulant. I'm not sure if any of these things are controlled substances here in the US, but I bet they are.

mormon tea is ephedra, a weed/herb that grows practically everywhere. i have gotten it from herb specialty stores and it does pack a little punch. it is rather bitter and tastes a bit like dried straw. its not unpleasant. i also would place a bit in my mouth and chew it for awhile, which worked very well.

Its quat or khat. All parts of the plant are illegal but you can get the seeds. There are more viable alternatives to grow. Cordyceps, Loin's Mane, or Reishi are better if you are looking for something safer and fungal. Cordyceps is a stimulant and the others have positive cns action.

I can say the opposite effect (sleep) is given from L.edodes. I've seen this synpthom also in other people that eat Shiitake.
Another effect of the mushrooms, Armillaria mellea mixed with Chantharellus cibarius made me make a lot of dreams (generally i always have horror dreams and sleep bad but with the mushrooms i sleep well)

Reishi tea tends to give a boost. I like to mix it with black tea to get the caffeine and a bit of flavor, to mask the bitterness of the reishi. RR

I imagine if you are trying to cut out the caffeine you could mix it with decaf coffee and brew it up as normal.

Kombucha is black tea cultured with a symbiotic blob of two different types of bacteria and two sp of yeast. There isn't a whole lot of substantiated research with it. There are a shit ton of different claims about what it can do. I started drinking it without any real expectations. I just liked the taste. It gives me more and different energy than just caffeine alone and could definitely be a viable option.

Just to add to this growing off topic list,
I've been drinking yerba Mate tea for about 2 years now. it's a tree in the holly family I believe, and has been used in numerous cases as a substitute for coffee. It's considered healthier than green tea, I really enjoy it because I can drink it straight and I dont crash afterwards.

Exercise, a good diet and meditation is far more effective and longer lasting than a chemical in your body--if you want to feel better and have more energy.

You are right to a very large extent. However the things named aren't "chemicals in the body" they are actually part of a healthy diet and lifestyle in some places. For an example the Reishi is giving you more energy because it is naturally uplifting you and giving your natural procecess a boost. I eat extremely well get vigorus exercise about every other day. But between snowboarding, mycology, and a full time job I'm worn the fuck out sometimes. Which is why I like this stuff. Besides yesterday when I went shoeing and riding up in the hills yesterday I smoked my friend that I went with (in a zig-zag) kidding, but I can't help but think that the Reishi and Cordyceps had something to do with me being as my friend described "like the Energiser Bunny". So While I do agree with you that a person should support natural energy levels through a healthy diet and lifestyle. These fungi do have a place within that. Speaking of which, I just remembered that I have some Kombucha in the fridge.
