Hey Guys
im pretty new to this and really am excited about that first flush that i will get.. but it hasnt happened yet!!
I have gotten all the parts complete such as performing sterile activities, inoculation, grain to grain transfer (to keep a constant supply of colonizing jars.
HERES MY PROBLEM! : i am casing them in a disposable cake pan, and casing with 50/50 sphagnum peat moss, and verm. it is then incubated for a couple days at 86, no overlay has been detected/ cold shocked for 15 hrs in the fridge, then maintained 73-76 degree 90-95 rh.... i HAVE HAD 3 DIFFERENT CASINGS FAIL... they never pin.. i fan 3 times daily.. everything is right.
PLEASE HELP! ive been failing for over 2 months now! what am i doing wrong for the last step!!???
thanks everyone

Did you pasteurize the casing?
also, don you think 86 might be a bit too high. casings generate thier own heat. who knows what the internal temp might be, possible near 90.
and higher temps=bacteria growth.
i would never incubate a casing at that temp.

my last two failed casings never got infected but just took 20 days for me to decide they werent gonna pin
i will get some pics up tonight.
i use a closet storage rack with levels.. and a heater at the bottom. each level is a 5 degree diff from above and below.. like the bottom is 75 middle is 80 etc... my casings are toward the middle. so they are all ready prepared for internal heat!
ive even let them overlay.. to putting them in there with a few ridges peeking through the casings.. ive tried it several ways.. (SAME OUTCOME) those stubborn lil guys just wont pin..
thanks! il get the pics up later on tonight

My friend above me is correct. No need to run your casing at 86. For one contams will come quicker at higher temp, and also the internal heat like my man said might be too high. They will keep themselves just fine at room temp. I prefer it actually. I only incubate petri dishes. Just some advice here too.... Forget the cold shock...waste of time with cubes. Also with the casings let them run until you see bits of mycelium coming up through to greet you. Patch the areas where it comes up with more casing media until the mycelium is coming up across the casing evenly. You want to insure a good pinset. good luck

Sorry man overlooked the part where you already told him about the higher temps= bacteria growth. Didnt mean to repeat.

How did you conclude that overlay was a good idea? Has this all been the same strain?
it is possible to have a mycelial network that doesn't produce fruitbodies, right?

Could it be a CO2 issue? I have had a couple cakes never fruit but out of a batch of 80 there were 3. That would suck to have a shitload of trays of retard myc but I doubt that is the case.

not sure if its a co2 issue.. i do give them proper fanning .i feel dumb because the first casing i ever put out had pins and the window was left open and it was the only night this year that 2 inches of snow fell... needless to say the pins were tiny craters in the white network the next morning.. SIGH...... it will happen..

what do you mean "covered" ? the bottom pic was of jars and my casing before the fruiting process.. the fc wasnt in any of the pics and its being 12/12 with 2 flrsnt cabinet lights.

It seems like all of your trays are enclosed with little Fresh Air Exchange. Try either poking holes in the big tubs and filling them with polyfill or micropore tape or just open them up. Works better than fanning IME.

the big tray is poked and has lots of holes for fae
once pins have started, what is the growth rate of shrooms at their optimal fruiting conditions?
