I've been listening to Beck's Sea Change for more than 2 years now in MP3, and just today I went out and FINALLY found the album for sale (he's not that famous in Spain) and damn!! I've been listening to 192Kbps MP3s and still I'm astonished at the difference in quality.
Granted, I'm listening to it with 120€ headphones, but you'd believe 192Kbps -allegedly transparent quality- would sound better.

512Kbps isn't so bad, but still not as nice as .wav or .aiff.
I don't know why more people aren't sharing rips or toasts of CDs, 700MB only takes an hour to DL with DSL...

It's not the download speeds, it's the storage space.

Right, but that shouldn't be a problem anymore with the cheap 500GB drives.

You can tell the difference? Those must be some sweet headphones.
I had a £50 pair of sehnheiser headphones I bought ten years ago. So comfortable, sound reproduction rivalled some very nice equipment I got to listen to, and made me realise what a bargain I had. Not to mention they were comfortable, perfect for my ears.
My dad built a headphone amplifier, and when needing help on theoretical electronics, consults his brother. I asked them to put a capacitor on the headphone output, so it wouldn't blow the voice coil, especially on a prototype unit, but he (uncle) said it was alright. And the guy might not have that much experience making electronics, but he's a genius, and rarely fallible.
He was this fucking time. Turned it on, my dad had miscalculated some variable, and the amplifier was "too good". Bollocks! It was too bloody powerful. It might have been good for some speakers, but it simply put way too much power into my headphones, and they died.
I did get an old, 80's pair of sehnheisers that were bigger, had a quarter inch adapter and sounded just as good as a replacement, but unfortunatly the two pronged connector that went to the headphones had a habit of dislodging under the slightest duress. Now I have a £20 pair, and the sound quality is, to all intents and purposes, as good as I remember, just not as comfortable.
I have digital copies I have made of my records, as well as cd's, and I listen to the three, comparing ogg, mp3, flac, cd and vynil. All I can tell is it's a record when one can hear the pickup scraping dust out of the grooves.

Sometimes MP3s just seem to be poor quality, regardless of the bitrate. Maybe someone made a high bitrate copy of a low bitrate rip of the original.

Yep, absolutely lossless. Usually it compresses to half the original size or so, but the quality is exactly the same as in CD and it does have support for 5.1, 48KHz and even 24 bits.
I have a mp3 player that plays it and it's amazing how much better flac is compared to MP3.
