Yeh, purty gyro's. Any of you ever eat them? I never have but I know people who do. I know people who love them and people who get really sick off them. And people who loved them until they got really sick off them...

absolutely, thats about all I found last season as far as morel's go. A bit depressing hunting morels, I'll scout some of the best spots that you'd think would be flourishing with morel's but there wont be a damn thing.

Given that they are growing from wood, doesn't that make them Gyromitra infula?

Happy mushrooming!

Naw, Gyromitra escuslenta, G. infula, and G. ambigua (all macroscopically very similar) are all saprotrophs with the potential to become mycorrhizal.

They looked slightly more like G. esculenta, but really, they could be any of the three species mentioned above.

Twas my thoughts too. I hear if they're prepared correctly they can be quite tasty, but some people have adverse affects w/ them.

Not only that, but I've read that the toxin accumulates. So even with properly cooked ones, people who eat them for years will suddenly get very sick. Cooking them without adequate ventilation has caused some intoxications too - perhaps a death? not sure if i read that or not.
