A walk in the park
    #7891227 - 01/17/08 12:01 AM (16 years, 16 days ago)

Took a walk this afternoon in the rain

All where found in a pine chip garden bed under eucalyptus trees.

Stinkhorns are aptly named.

aseroe rubra. The flies are attracted to the dark goo that is deposited around the indentation in the center. When they fly away they carry spores with them. Nice.

They turn wood into dirt.

The stink is a trick to attract the flies.

And fyi. The flies and other insects that land on the sticky, smelly mushroom, get spore goo on their legs, and help distribute the spores elsewhere. That's why stink horns reek- because they do not forcefully discharge spores like most mushrooms, so they rely on other methods for dispersal.

Crazy almost like the mushroom had a brain. Survival of the fittest perhaps?
