Mushroom Growing just got a whole bunch easyer, PC tupperware!
    #7890336 - 01/16/08 09:01 PM (16 years, 16 days ago)

So I successfully PC some Tupperware tonight

why is this good?

someone washing Tupperware is a lot less suspicious than someone washing canning jar

Tupperware comes in different shapes, usually square which allows you to stack them and get more room out of your circular PC.

Also my Tupperware a 3x5x5 inches so its like a casing without the risks of exposing the substrate to Air

Tupperware is cheaper than jars, <3$ for 6 10 ounce containers vs. 7$ for 12 1/2 pint jars.

Won't Tupperware melt?
Some will, some wont, I tested mine by wrapping it in foil, PC for 10 min at 10 psi, then longer till I was sure that it wasn't melted. I raised it out of the water, and pulled it from the PC right after cooking to see if the plastic was goo like, which it wasn't.

the type of plastic should be 5 PP(look for a recycle symbol on container) aka Polypropylene
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polypropylene

This is safe to eat off of and heat with your food, it will usually say microwave safe. Note some times the lid is a different type of plastic and might melt. If so just use foil as a lid

My container was a Tops brand seal and lock snack pack

Prep for the container-
keep away from walls of pressure cooker to be safe, Put some foil on one side of the locking lid so pressure can escape the tubs

Let me know what you think!

I already utilize this, I picked up some nice nail buckets(#5 of course) and haven't used them yet but I will soon, they are about 5 inches deep then 3-4 inches across in the bottom and they are square and tapered. I also use Ziplock Twist n Seals and I don't worry about them touching the sides of the PC..they work just fine, I actually prefer the plastic, go figure! Anyways good luck to you and yours.

If you don't use a foil lid your containers don't have gas exchange. I've experimented with different containers before such as my pie pans. I used foil lids for those and they worked... sometimes. I was baking mine instead of pressure cooking them. This I think increased the risk of contamination because getting the moisture content right was tricky. The point of my experiment was to find a way for people to make mushrooms in containers they already owned and with equipment such as an oven rather than using a pressure cooker. Ultimately my experiment showed that it was possible to grow mushrooms in a thin substrate layer by baking the substrate but I didn't carry it out long enough to get precise values for moisture, baking time etc. Long story short, your containers are probably ok as long as you just used foil lids. If you used lids that seal air tight you have no gas exchange and that'll probably slow things down a good bit. I know when I've used smaller holes in my jar lids or no holes or holes with the polyfil packed too tightly the jars just don't colonize as fast. But hell you never know right. If you left plenty of space at the top of the container there might be enough air in the damn thing to get you to 100% +7 days in no time at all. I'm all in favor of experimentation. Good luck buddy.
C.H.

Sounds good, I figured people out there were doing this stuff but never really saw anything in the forums about it, and many people pass up the idea because they think all Tupperware melts, or that they blindly follow the PFtek w/o experimenting (which is fine)

One thing i forgot to mention is plastic is usually brittle so no hole punching or it will shatter. I agree with foil lids as long as you keep them good and tight

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

But you can set a Dixie cup into the middle of a roaring fire and boil the water inside.
Oh, it might singe the rim a bit, but it won't burn while there's water in it.

In the world we live in they can take your parents house away because of your stupid ass manufacturing drugs inside of it. It's good to see how you repay the people that put a roof over your head and wiped your ass as a baby by putting their home, careers, lifestyle, etc. at risk.

That's the problem. It's NOT your house. :nonono:

You use tupperware so that your parents aren't suspicious about you growing mushrooms in their house.

1. You are growing mushrooms in your parents house

2. They have no knowledge of what you are doing

Please enlighten us as to what part of the situation we missed? Grow up kid and quit putting your parents in jeopardy.
