I'm kind of late to the draw on this post, but regardless. I find misting to be the most aggravating thing to master about this hobby. Balancing FAE and misting is something that still trips me up after a year in.
I find the forums are ripe with conflicting information on this topic. It just seems to be in the last few years that the emphasis has been on getting FAE in check and misting isn't a problem.
I think some of the confusion stems from everyone being pointed to the pinning strategy, which says to stop misting after primordia form. This assumes a very high humidity environment where the casing doesn't require being replenished with water. Which leads to more convolution when you read folks comments about casings only needing 85% RH
I guess the best bet to understanding and providing the best climate for your little guys defiantly comes down to studying where your strain or species comes from.

look no perlite, no rh gauge, no fans, no heaters. Just room temp with a 1-2 daily misting. okay, really no more pics

Tahoe,
Just a thank you from a NOOB!!! First, I am not familiar with the search features here as I am so new to this site & as I don't know what to ask to find what I am looking for (no banner needed, just a little patience). Second, THIS IS what I was trying to find info on! I read all the info & watched vids on youtube & pretty much all of them said NOT to direct spray your cakes! But wait I am supposed to dunk these things before casing in water! WTF!!!
If Verminute wouldn't have said that it was to keep from washing off the vermiculite or other casing I'd be asking why all the other info says the opposite & still be biting my nails & pulling out my hair.
I make my own spore prints, syringes, clones & currently use G2G method. I am looking into at getting into liquid colonization next. As for direct misting, I soak everything down three or four times daily. I think That I am getting the hang of all this. I am just into my third month & just starting new experimental tries at colonization.

well, thats a nice wbs substrate, but those pictures don't really surprise me.. thats a huge container for one small wbs substrate... there is massive amounts of fresh air available to it...
the small wbs substrate isn't actually, in any end result, getting all that water as most of it is evaporating off into the surround fresh air.
do that with a tub full of wbs or bulk sub with no fan and see what happens. lol
I'm sure the direct misting would work well on a larger grow, but you would need to dial in the FAE to balance the rh of the air you are introducing, time schedule of when you mist, and how much you mist.
pooling water in a tub full of fungus without proper air exchange is bound to get infected with bacteria.
It looks like it's going to be an awesome chunk of grain... thing is still pinning.

I have noticed that direct misting goes along with strain. I.E. some strains dont like it and it bruises the mushroom deep blue. Penis envy, Palenque and Blue Meanies IME. But other strains seem to thrive with it like Treasure Coast and Ban Hua Thanon Knowing Where the strain originated from and its climate can help to determine whether or not the strain will NEED or HANDLE being directly misted. Know your climate and Produce it!

The point of this post was mainly to show how wet you can get the casings/cakes without worry. These are showing signs of high co2 but this has nothing to do with the direct soaking. Most of you folk would be happy to have the same results that I had even though the fae was not optimal. So this is the last and final pic of this tech. I will be deleting all the pics later today. These portabellas have really taken off and got tall from the co2. I also pulled the cap of of one of them 2 days ago to show that it will still grow without a cap.
