Hey GG aka Sporz...

Nice Caster find! Great pics of the mushies in their natural
habitat. I might get out this week and look for some Casters
myself (not coming up @ work). I am through with going to
farmers fields for this season. Too many mosquitos and with
the Western Nile Virus out there, not worth the risk.

Keep posting your finds for all to see and be envious of!

Peaceful Nomad

From Psilocybe Mushrooms of the World -- Paul Stamets

Panaeolus castaneifolius (Murrill) Ola'h
Cap: 1-3 (4) cm broad. Distinctly campanulate at first, soon subhemispheric, then convex and becoming broadly convex in age. Margin incurved at first, soon straightening, not appendiculate, and slightly striated. Dark smoky gray when moist, hygrophanous, soon drying to a more straw yellow or pale ochraceous, and remaining more reddish brown at the apex and more smoky brownish along the margin. Surface sometimes finely wringkled. Gills: Attachment adnate to adnexed close, and thin. Pallid at first, becoming dark purplish gray-black at spore maturity. Stem: 40-60 (75) mm long by 3-4 (6) mm thick. Equal to more narrow towards the base. Hollow or tubular, and brittle. Grayish to ochraceous or tan at the base. Surface slightly striated, pruinose. Microscopic features: Spores black in deposit, finely roughened.... Habit, habitat and distribution: Growing scattered to gregariously in grassy areas across the North and South American continents. Possibly more widely distributed. Comments: Latently psilocybin, according to Ola'h (1996), and when so, weak. Some but not all collections of this species contain psilocybin. Distinguished from Panaeolus foenisecii by the color the mature gills and spore deposit, which are very dark purplish gray-black.

Ok, but i think that this Ola'h dude should come to my coast of florida and analyze the ones growing here. Ounce to Ounce, i think that they can be more potent than Cubensis.

If you live up north you'll have a hard time distinguishing Pan casters from the in-active mushroom Panaeolina foenisecii.

And Peaceful Nomad, you asked me in a PM if there are any look-a-like's to this mushroom here in sarasota.. No, not really. The closest thing to these that are found in the same lawns are the inactive dung loving mushrooms Panaeolus campanulatus variation sphinctrinus. Those are in-active but in no way poisonous. They have darker reddish brown/grey stems and do not stain blue at the base of the stems as the Pan casters do.

Keep shroomin,
G

Nomad buddy,

Did you send a sample print of the casters you found to Mr. Mushrooms to be seen under the microscope?

I am now convinced that most of what I find in the lawns are casters...not because of your post GG...but just because of lot?s of research. The spore prints are different between subbs and casters...I have been finding a good amount of subbs too. I do notice a lot more of a purplish/smokey color in the casters. The big difference I find between casters and large foenescii are the gills, hard to explain exactly but the gills seem to alternate between one large, one small and so on...probably a term for it...but it is too early for me to figure it out. I also find that the casters I find up here are not very potent when dry, you need to eat a tonne much more than one would want to...fresh however is a different story alltogether, I also find that the ones that blue at the base...not all do...seem to be more potent, so instead of picking many from now on I am starting to be much more selective. The main difference I find between these and subbs are, the subbs usually have a more reddish stem, are a little taller, straighter stem, and start to go blackish blue on the caps, and usually leave a nice bit of jet black spore effluent on the grass, casters don?t drop their spores as reddily.

Anyways, just my observations...sorry if some of it did not make sense...it is early in the morning.

Cheers

Oh and here is another description, this is based oon the P North West, but itseems very similar to what I find up here.

FLESH thick, firm, (PNW keys)
GILLS adnate to adnexed, close, thin; pallid, becoming dark purplish gray-black, (Stamets), adnate to adnexed, subclose; pallid, darkening to chestnut with age, edge white, (PNW keys)

I find mushrooms that look exactly like the ones in the first picture all the time in my yard after it rains. They never stain blue though and instead always bruise brown. The gills are kinda tanish brown when they are young and then upon maturation the gills get alot darker and look really dark brown to black. I'm gonna get a digital camera and post a pic soon. Should I even bother or is there a chance that they are the same kind.

If you are in Honky Kong then you may only be finding Panaeolus foenisecii and/or Panaeolus papilionaceus. Err, Hong Kong that is
I have found these two mushrooms in the Olympic village One's park surrounded by around 9 new fifty story buildings and there is a parking garage below the park.
TThat is in Olympic, in Kowloon.

Keep shroomin,
GG
