Your ISP and you

I am posting this here and not the security forum because I need feedback quickly.
I had a weird message from my ISP that basically said "We have some concerns about your internet connection that we'd like to discuss."
Maybe I am getting paranoid here, but does/can an ISP track everything you download? As a hypothetical example, would they take action if a user downloaded music from a torrent site?
Anybody receive a call like this? What usually comes of it?
I'm just weirded out and I want to gather info before I call them back.
I live in Canada BTW

yes ISP can track everything you do unless you are tunneling thru to another network.

if its something else, then whatever

Yeah, I have had friends who have gotten "cease and desist" letters from their ISP over downloaded stuff.
It's usually movies or TV episodes. Basically they give you a warning and threaten to drop your contract if it happens again. Also they will tell you that they'll hand over your info to the MPAA or the RIAA or whatever if they ask them for it.
But that's usually in the letter. Never heard of anyone being asked to call.
There are peer protectors out there to encrypt your data from your ISP and stuff. Might want to get one.

Your ISP be see that you are sending out lots of stuff w/o your knowledge and bandwith hogging, obviously like a virus would use your computer as a jumpoff to infect more ppl. They see this and let you know to clean your comp. up or they will disconnect your internet connection until you do. My roommate said he knew someone that had it happen to him too. I wouldn't worry just find out.

Thanks for your responses everybody.
I called and they said there was a huge amount of upload traffic (I guess from file-sharing programs) and at this rate I will have to upgrade my account.
All is well. Thanks everyone.

Is there an upload limit stated in your contract?
Can you tell us who your ISP is?

I think a lot of ISPs actually do that.

I got a notice in the mail that my ISP usage had been very heavy at some particular point in time, and that they suspected me of downloading movies and other illegal material. I laughed at them and demanded that they show proof. I haven't heard from them since.

I didn't know that I did, but apparently I do.

They said my limit is 60GB, and so far this month I've trafficked 52GB. Last month my total was 117GB, 90GB of which was uploaded from my PC. I guess I had stuff seeding all day with no transfer limit set.

Interesting, 'round these parts (California, USA) the ISP implements a mandatory upload and download speed cap instead of total limit cap. For example, I can only upload at a maximum of around 68 kbps, but I can do it all damn day and night no sweat. My downstream is limited to around 600 kbps. This seems much more effective than trying to implement a cap on the total data transferred over a given period. It essentially IS a cap on total data eligible for transfer, but it manages itself through the speed cap instead of relying on the user or monitoring systems to watch accounts that approach or exceed the total limit.

Two of my friends got a similar warning from their ISP's when they downloaded a certain game.
Of course they continued using torrents just the same and nothing else ever happened.
