Marijuana study

Some local university is doing a study on the effects of marijuana. From what their staff has told me so far it's a study to see if you can tell the difference between placebo and marijuana. Seems a bit too easy of a study so I wonder if there is something more to it. I'm waiting for the doctor that is heading the study to call me back to schedule a physical to qualify me for the first round of testing.
Apparently they just give you a placebo cigarette, probably just an herbal smoking blend, and one with marijuana. You have to go in for 6 hours at a time, 1-2 times a week for three weeks. I think they said there will be a total of 5 sessions. The compensation for the study is $450. I'm really hoping I qualify because I could definitely use an extra $450 right now.
The only thing I can see screwing me over is that I get asthmatic whenever I get a cold. I don't use inhalers on a daily basis and I told the guy taking my info that the last time I needed my inhaler was over 4 months ago. They asked about other drug use, alcohol use, any prescription meds, and health conditions. I'd say I'm in good physical shape, excellent blood pressure, and nothing really out of the ordinary that would keep me from completing the study.
So now I sit and wait, wishing with every fiber of my being that I am asked to participate in the study. And that they don't have poopschwags.

Too see if you can tell the difference? They probably won't tell you what they really are studying till afterwards otherwise people may skew the results.

That seems possible. At the same time, however, it seems like that would be an ethical conflict, saying a subject is being tested for X when they are really being tested for Y.

I took psych and I do not think it is unethical. Ever heard of a double blind study? That is when the doctors do not even know what is being tested, just the higher ups like the people who organize it.

I've taken a few psych courses myself and I think you are mistaken. Double-blind does not mean those who are administering the experiment are unaware of what is being tested. They just don't know which group is the control and which is the experiment, therefore they are unaware of who is being tested.

Make sure you read over what they give you to sign if you are going to do it. You don't want out to find out later you're sick because they gave you some messed up shit and it's not their fault because you signed your life away.

I'm good with fine print. I never sign anything before reading it completely.

In most studies, they will tell you what you are blind to. Ask them what you'll be doing, and what the purpose is.
e.g. most ethical review boards require you to know the basic overview of the study.
If you really want to get specific, find the investigators previous publications. Although ethically, you may be functionally breaking the blind by doing so.

Yeah thats the case. Imagine if they were like this is a marijuana study and secretly made you an AIDS test subject? Hence the need for ethical standards.
