PF tek speed up colonization mod?
    #7886900 - 01/16/08 12:39 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I want to get 8 jars and drill a hole on the side near the bottom.(I might just run a tube through the top of the lid and to the bottom instead of drilling into the glass.) Then a rubber grommet and put an aquarium tube in each jar. Hook up a T barb so that each jar gets a tube. Then run a dual aquarium air pump once a day for a minute or so. I also would add a HEPA filter and mod it to fit the pump. This would keep mold spores from being injected through the tubes.

I think it would speed up colonization times. I also think that it would help to keep Trich away because I read that it can only survive in stagnant air. I plan on keeping micropore tape on the holes to keep the substrate from drying out because of the added oxygen.

Alot of my jars I noticed take the longest at the bottom to colonize because they simply dont get enough oxygen.

Has this been done before?
Do you think the improvment would be worth trying?
Im not looking to hear things like dont mess with cakes do this or that. I still use cakes for LC and bulk substrates I just dont fruit cakes anymore.

Growing up watching MR. WIZARD inspired me. Dont tell me you dont remember MR. Wizard? [image]

I don't think that would help, only one way to find out.

I think it might dry out your cakes by the time they colonized

Thats why I said I would cover the holes with micropore tape. I have never had a jar dry out with breathable tape. Only jars with holes uncovered. The air pump would only run about a minute a day.

Quite a waste of time and materials. Myc runs about as fast as it can throughout colonization. Only completely sealed jars run into stalling sometimes. O2 is not a factor.

Exactly right. You're way over thinking this. FAE is not really a factor in the colonization of the jars! Gas exchange is something else. You're only going to increase the chances of failure by doing that. KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Well if it wont help mycellium growth. Will it keep Trich away? I know you shouldnt have a trich problem if you use sterile techniques.
Will it keep the mean green away?
