Freaking out about blood test

I have to get some labwork done for the doctor and I am seriously freaking out. I freak out over getting my blood drawn. I usually pass out and have like a mini seizure- and that's just waiting for the nurse to get to my room- before I even see a needle! The last successful attempt at getting my blood drawn was 2 years ago when I had some virus that made me throw up all the time and they hit me with some serious anti-nausea shot that felt like a horse tranquilizer. I was pretty much unconscious when they did it.
There's just something about finding a vein or making veins pop out that REALLY freaks me out. I can't watch parts of movies where people shoot up... and I can't watch any hospital TV shows where they are drawing blood or putting in an IV.
One of my friends had a mild heart attack and I was sitting in his hospital room after the ambulance first brought him in... and the nitro stuff they gave him made his heart rate drop suddenly.... and all these alarms started going off so a bunch of nurses rushed in and one of them just suddenly stuck in a line for an IV and I passed out.
Even making this post is making me light headed and woozy.

Man up? I've never had blood drawn, is it really that bad?

What freaks you out more... the blood coming out of your body? The needle going in? If you look away you should be fine, remember it's the tiniest thinnest needle, all you really feel is a pinch. I've had a lot of bloodwork done as a kid so I'm pretty used to it.
Nothing tops donating blood though. That needle is a LOT bigger and you literally watch a pint bag fill up with your dark ass blood. I actually got light headed from that. Not from the sight, from the loss of blood. .

I'm kind of the same as you...but not as intense. It's just probably the most uncomfortable, violating feeling ever when some person you don't even know is TAKING your blood and causing you discomfort in the process.
I get really tense, which doesn't help the situation at all. While the needle is inside me I'm really anxious. I don't look or watch while this whole thing is going on. I just grit my teeth and swear in my head. I can take it...but I don't like it. I have to do it every 4 weeks right now, so the nurses are pretty good. They try to make it go as smoothly as possible. Nurses are good people.
If you get so freaked out that you're having panic attacks, there is something else going on. Getting some blood taken out is not going to kill you. I'm pretty confident in saying that 99% of the time, you're getting blood taken so that doctors and nurses can help you and keep you healthy.
It's uncomfortable and sometimes violating....but suck it up. It's not going to kill you or seriously hurt you. I've actually had bug bites that were worse then a needle.

I heard you get a massive high after you donate, due to the creation of more blood. Is this true? Can anyone explain in detail?

yeah I totally wimped out and didn't do it.
I don't know. I just can't stomach blood.
I can tolerate watching someone get a tattoo or getting pierced that doesn't bother me.
I can take shots in the arm or hip.
IVs and drawing blood just gets to me. I don't know what I'm scared of. it just freaks me out.

I'm with you StonedShroom. I was ordered to have a blood test by my doctor a few weeks ago. I completely freaked when the lady took my arm and tried to find a vein. Got up and left...

The anticipation is the worst part. Tell yourself that you're not afraid to get your blood drawn, that it doesn't hurt, and believe it.

Mind over matter. If you can do this and beleive it, it will work. No fear. Fear will ruin you.

Yeah I have the same problem.
I also used to have trouble in health class at school when we'd be talking about blood. Once in science class in 8th grade, we were watching a video of heart attacks and strokes with the blood vessels bursting shown from inside the body. Omg.
Last time I went to the doctor I didn't let them take my blood. I just had the flu or something, wtf they need my blood for. They didn't argue.
My friend has been shooting heroin and she would love for me to try. Sorry! I just can't do it. I have watch her shot up a few times and I can barely take it. Needles or blood drawn, I just can't do it. Even if I let her shoot me, the heroin would hit me while I'm passing out and I imagine something weird will happen where my heart will stop and I'm dead.
Besides nearly passing out, I also tend to squirm, moan, pace around the room, etc.

Yup, I'm the same exact way too. I'm not as bad anymore - its really only in the middle of my arm when I freak out. I've only had blood taken once and I had to get it done through my hand with a butterfly. That might help you out if you have a similar problem. Its really not THAT BAD, it doesn't hurt - but I absolutely know how it fucks with your mind. I almost curl up just thinking about certain things.

There are a lot of people who are afraid of needles. I'd imagine it's a hard fear to get over.
I think it helps to just trust that the people doing it are trained professionals and whatever is being done is probably in your best interest. (unless it's for a drug test, then it's to screw you over)
Most nurses are really good about their needling and don't even leave a mark, while some n00bish nurses are like BRUISE BRUISE BRUISE.
I dunno, I always look at my arm when the nurse or doctor tells me to look away.
Good luck.

I don't think it's the needle I have an issue with. I can stand tattoos and piercings and shots. and it's not the pain, it hardly even hurts... it's just the thought of like veins and blood and just like slapping the arm to get a vein makes me want to pass out. sometimes even if my hands are looking really veiny I feel light headed.
Maybe I was a junky in my previous life and learned my lesson.

No, it isn't bad at all... but the mind can be devious at times, and phobias suck. I have no problem at all drawing blood from others, but don't do so well when I am the one getting stuck. The last time I got a shot, the nurse kept telling me to relax (after the needle was in). My arm had seized up, and she couldn't get the needle back out. When it did come out, the thing looked like a corkscrew.

Your not exaggerating any are you? Because that sounds really bad considering you can get collapsed veins from poor needle usage when with-drawling the needle or inserting it.

Nope, it was a immunization shot, thus a thin needle. After getting stuck, my arm muscle tensed, bending the needle bad enough she couldn't easily pull it back out (while my arm was still tense).

It doesn't matter if it is thin it can still do damage, poor needle usage is poor needle usage, I'm pretty damn sure, someone correct me if I'm wrong but when i started shooting H I researched needle usage and found out all that shit, but I don't shoot anymore.
