Hey I am just trying to get this figured out for a friend. He is in the Las Vegas area and he sent me this pic for verification.

Could someone lend a hand and help us out???

Thanks

VERY INTERESTING!

They both appear to be T. pachanoi not "P.C." tho, as far as I can tell...

The one on the right in the top pic appears to be a monstrose T. pachanoi! A real find my friend!

Doesn't look monstrose, looks like a change in rib count.

Very pretty cacti!

It does appear as if a small portion of that is monstrose, but that could be a result of the change in rib cont.  And I would have to say T. Pachanoi as well.

Nice find! :sun:

I've talked about this elsewhere in maybe some more depth, but let me see what I can do to clarify the issue of the "short spined T. peruvianus" again.

The name "short spined T. peruvianus" is a name I made up myself when I got the plant in the following photo from Cactus Corral (CC). At the time CC was trying to get rid of a lot of its larger plants and I believe this particular clone was then sold to California Cactus Center (CCC) who quickly started selling the identical clone, also calling it its original name of simply "T. peruvianus."

When I got the plant it was simply called "T. peruvianus," and because I didn't want to change the species name, but find a way to differentiate it from what was generally called T. peruvianus at the time, I called it the "short spined T. peruvianus." At the time the following sort of plant was the most common one being referred to as T. peruvianus.- M.S.Smith

It would be great for some more pictures. Especially a closeup of the spines and one of the whole plants.
To me it looks somewhat bridgesoid especially in the left plant of the top pic which could explain the monstrose tendencies. Although zoomed out in the bottom pic it looks like a pach.
Either way, nice find.

where in that quote does he say that no such cactus exists???
he clearly states that he named it "short spined peruvianus" to differentiate it from the classic form of t. peruvianus...

The darker one is certainly pachanoi. I would guess the other is too because they look the same other than the color and the rib change. I wouldn't call that monstrose. I have a few cacti that resemble the bottom picture where the cacti went into dormancy. When the conditions changed the following season it grew extra ribs. But looking at the top picture, it looks like the stunted growth could have been the result of meristem damage. I guess in this sense it could be regarded as monstrose growth...but in my experience it has always gone back. I even had one cutting where a chunk of the tip was missing. What was left was a tip with only half the number of ribs and a calloused hole where the others were. When it started to grow again it looked like it was cresting in the hole, but those ribs grew out normally. It did have some resemblance to that witht he line and all. I guess my point is I think whatever it was was caused by physical damage and it's just another pachanoi. My only question is that if they were both pachanois growing side by side like that why is there a difference in color?

I don't know who this guy is, or why everyone hates him (haven't been around much recently), but it's true that the species of peruvianus is pretty much a shit-blunder of wrongly identified cacti (largely thanks to Mr. Knize).

I don't recall Smith saying short spined peruvianus don't exist. As someone else pointed out, I think he used the term to differentiate from the long spined peruvianus which he believes to be T. cuzcoensis. It's been a long time since I've read his posts. Is the short spined peruvianus what he believes was originally identified by Britton and Rose?

I point this out from time to times in my posts, particularly with the cuzcoensis ordeal. I don't recall getting bitched out too much because of it, so I figure this guy has either done something(s) else to piss everyone off, has an attitude about the subject, or the shroomery is just slightly less friendly these days.

It's a confusing subject, and a confusing genus. Let's chill.
