heating pad/shoe box incubator

i have 8 1/2 pint jars in a big shoe box. the temp in my house is about 68* and 6 days after inoculation the jars are starting to colonize nicely. i put a heating pad on high on top of the shoe box and the temp went to 79* inside the box. the jar lids were also very warm when i touched them. will the heating pad dry out the substrate? is it safe to use as a cheap incubator?

Why? What's wrong with brining the temps up some?

Heating pads are not reliable. You have no temp control. Most likely you will over heat the jars. Heating pads are a great way to burn your house down. They will colonize at room temp.

68 will be slow though... using a heatbomb incubator to get up to 75 would'nt hurt.

Dude i used to have a tub in tub incubator and let ambient temps get to 83F. I did side by side comparisons and 83f colonized the fastest but, using a heating pad im not sure of. Every one on here disagrees with me but i have pounds and pounds under my belt so haha poop on them lol jk

83 is starting to get to hot. at 83 your jars are probably around 88 inside. PRIME temps for bacteria and mold growth.

RogerRabbit said: I've been saying that for years. My petri dish studies a few years ago showed that cubensis reaches peak linear growth between 75F and 80F, then is flat until 83F, where it starts to slow down. Mycelium at 86F is growing at about 2/3 the speed of mycelium at 80F. In addition, the higher temps tend to stimulate thermophic molds and bacteria.
There's LOT'S of good information in TMC, but that 86F figure is one of the errors. RR
