Thought Loops
    #7885579 - 01/15/08 08:10 PM (16 years, 17 days ago)

I've always gotten thought loops on mushrooms, good trip or bad, and they have always fascinated me.  It was on my second trip that I realized that understanding "it" in the thought loops would only come at a certain point in the loop, and then I would almost certainly lose "it."  You would have to experience this to know what I'm talking about.  I realized that true understanding of your current state means accepting that you are going to forget soon and not get "it."

So fast forward to two nights ago.  I was tripping on 1/8th of good shrooms.  And in the midst of a thought loop i realized something.  I think all our thoughts can be organized into thought loops.  Some of them are relatively small, lasting maybe three hours.  Some are bigger, maybe encompassing several weeks and what the majority of your mental energy goes towards.  And maybe, I thought, your whole life is one big thought loop.

At the time it terrified the shit out of me but now I think it's kind of cool.  I haven't decided weather to seriously consider this thought for entrance into my vaunted "shit i believe in" vault, but I thought I might turn the idea over to the shroomery to see if anybody's had any similar thoughts regarding thought loops.

Sorry if any of this is unclear, this is a pretty amorphous idea and I haven't really organized it within my brain yet

So....DISCUSS!!!

i've experienced these.

cyclical cogitation would be a cool-ass name for it.. sounds better than thought loop.

i think a lot of things are coincidences.. i try to think in a spectrum around things to try to find solutions to problems.. like analyze every solution in a circular manner-type process..

i dunno if that's the response you were wanting?

I have never experienced thought loops that bothered me.

So Im not sure we are talking about the same thing.

The loops are caused by a primal need to fuse all thoughts together in order to observe the actual complexity and framework of the mind.

There are all sorts archetypal motives for thought loops and thats why everyone experiences them differently.

For me, thought loops mean making a connection to something in the past and applying it to your current state of mind.
This can happen within the scope of one minute or less, or a far greater period of time.

It can help predict the future.

I think thought loops are very interesting, but I have never experienced them in the way most people have.

The loops are everywhere.
These associations dont end at any given place.
Your mind is much better than a computer.
Small/tiny loop= "im too fucked up", "my girlfriend doesnt love me",
"im going to die", my heart rate is fucked", etc etc.

Big loop= magic loop.
Bigger, a process, all encompassing, a system that knows know bounds.
You build an architecture and then keep making associations and building upon them until you reach a greater understanding.

I think its the same tool, but sometimes the content is simple and takes over no matter how negative, simple and unproductive the loop system is.

To see a map of interconnected ideas that work together is the same thing.
Its a machine and what you put in is the former self of what comes out.
Its always a different form of the same thing.

i definently get these loops but i have a.d.d so unlike acid which seems to improve this sitaution, shrooms seems to take my brian and scatter it, mix it up and ill get caught in one loop which leads some how to a seemingly unrealated loop so on and so fourth until i end up right where i began.

And this is one of the ways i learn from shrooms find connections between the seemingly unconnected and finding the meaning behiind it. and aplying it to my life.
?
shrooms always reminded me of that song by radiohead myxometosis?spelling?

I love the loop that slows down and changes all the rest of them
and of course the repetitive heart beat and breathing are a charm

Psychedelics help us notice things we have learned to un-see by temporarily breaking down the mind filters to the outside world. Maybe we have similar filters in how we see our own thoughts similar to those that we develop in perception. I know I see my mind totally different when I am tripping.

These loops in our own minds that some of us are becoming more aware of may be more noticeable on psychedelics. Perhaps we can break them in similar ways to how we would break a negative loop on psychedelics; by changing something. When Im in a loop, I move to another room or turn on/off some lights.

Maybe we can break these thought loops that most of us are in without knowing it by changing things in our lives. Like quitting a job, getting a new hobby, learning a new language, etc.

Coolest post ever.

"I love the loop that slows down and changes all the rest of them".

Ya there are no limits.

I know you love salvia like I do, and that is the only substance I could truely metaprogram without much harsh/complex cognitive effort.
It was not a process like with the rest.
I put a series of rings I didnt need on a short pole and threw them away.

I too have seen the butterfly effect within my mind in real time.

Once while I was tripin on acid I went into a loop and thought I was gonna be that way forever. I couldn't even get scared. All I did was stare at some beautiful flowers which were tall weeds with sunlight going between them. With that same thought loop for about a half n hour

I'm not really bothered by them at all, to me they are a vital part of tripping.  Some can be off setting, but if you just sit and breathe, it all works out in the end. :mushroom2:

I've never had thought loops... I've gotten really stuck in a single idea, even a totally abstract one, but it's not like I was thinking/saying/doing the same thing over and over again. Though time dilation always occurs, I'm always aware of what has happened earlier and what order it occurred in.

It sounds terrible, though. I'd hate to just be stuck on the same thing over and over again.

I've never had thought loops either. I've read about what they are and friends have told me about their thought loops but I've really never experienced them on a trip. I think maybe the closest thing would be Salvia where right after I exhale a hit and it seems the moment starts and it never goes anywhere, it's like the same moment compounding on itself - something like that, perhaps.

edit: Now that yageman posts I understand what you guys mean by thought loops, though I would have never thought to call them "thought" loops because it feels like time itself is going in a loop. Yeah, time loops can be terrifying, feels like your whole frame of reference is being invalidated.

Edit: I completely forgot about them until yageman made that post, it brought back all these crazy memories from trips I've had.

I dont think that happens unless you are too fixated and scared.
Honestly................
That has happened to me though, so im not just giving shitty info.

That was not what I was talking about.

I was talking about having access to everything that makes you you.
Everything is cyclical.
You may never see that or you might see it so clearly that it will drive you into static nerve fucking territory.

There is a golden mean.

The cycles are dependent on you if you can observe them.

Its a fractal.
You have full blow permission to access your entire history and apply that to your present self.
Not a cd thats skipping and owning your thoughts.

Thought loops do have a core.

Not many people understand why this shit even happens.

Its a Huge subject(why people experience it differently).
As small or large the stimulation or platform, you will always be going somewhere.

The cycles are very important.
They also have very different sizes.

I understand though loops but have never been stuck in one for any notable amount of time.
I just move on, and then eventually return and have new things to think about when im in that same place.

Yeah, if i have a bad trip I always get stuck on one thought and no matter how hard I try I can't escape from it so I get scared into thinking that nothing exists beyond that thought.

For people who say its fun I highly doubt you're experiencing what I think of as a thought loop

I've never had thought loops either, although one trip I almost wanted to kill myself because I made some pretty strange realizations about life in general and I could not stop thinking about it, I was devastated..  I remember laying in my bed almost crying trying to fall asleep for like 3 hours and I couldn't stop thinking about it  I was tripping way too much back then, like once a week or more.. and that time I got really bored and depressed during my trip. I wouldn't really call it a bad trip, it was definitely some form of ego death no doubt.

Ha, I know that feeling. More than just a feeling- all senses and observations entwined in a chaotic reaction from the previous moment. How one single event has impacted your senses, your thought patterns, and you interpretations of your surroundings. This is what trips me out most in my journeys thus far. It comes to me at a point long after my ego has been shattered by the 4th dimension.

I'll never forget my first thought loop. Took complete dominance over my existence- my reality. And hey, your existence is deemed by your perception. When everything around you is caught up, unravelling but always moving in a loop, the potential for re-evaluation of just about everything becomes great.

I'm infinitely intrigued and cautious of thought loops, as I know thats where my own secrets lie, and where the chaos can come. Haven't found myself in a loop in a few trips- one being my most epic and beautiful trip thus far. I think that loops, for me, are the result of anxiety building and being dwelled upon. Let go and don't travel in a circle- be everywhere, every time.

--------------------
Life is just a flashback...

I may have gone a bit too far, I fear
Will I get out of it this time?
What was I thinking, taking this leap
I thought I knew where we would go
If only I knew, I had no idea.
