year old wbs jars
    #7885462 - 01/15/08 07:52 PM (16 years, 17 days ago)

Yesterday i made 4 filter patch bags with coir/verm and some excellent 15yr+ compost. i used fully colonized quart jars and made two from Cambodian jars, one with a wild Texas strain,(the one jar colonized 50% quicker then the rest of the Texas jars so i used it)i also used two pint jars of panama that fully colonized well over a year ago, the myceluim in the jar has shrunk so small that it could probably fit in a half pint jar and the only color on is most defiantly metabolites. when i mixed the panama into the substrate it felt almost slimey, but it was gonna go in the garbage if i didn't do anything with it so i used it.Today i peeked in my incubator to see that the first 3 bags had already started to spread new myc.The panama on the other hand dose not have anything viable but there is condensation on the inside of the bag witch makes me think that its doing sum thing. has anyone ever used or herd of using wbs jars a year or so after it colonizes with any success? and if not, dose anyone has any reasons why it would or wouldnt work, think it might take longer ? i dunno any input would be cool.

Were you sure it was metabolites? Maybe it just needs some time to recover from its dormant state.

RR suggested once that you could take a dry shroom, hydrate it and clone it with agar. I do not see why you could not revitalize old myc and get it to activate a bulk substrate. I believe unless therre is contamination, it could work. My oldest with success was 3 month old popcorn and it worked.

I'm sure it won't be as aggresive though. Post results.

I have about 48 rye jars that are just as you described.  I hate to throw them all out but it looks like that is what i might do.  I am not too hopeful that the myc would take hold of a new substrate.  I'll be watching this thread for more experienced growers to advise us though.   good luck with yours, it sounds like it's going good.

if you live in a warm climate i would say mix those with sum compost in your backyard.. i would never throw out 48 colonized jars! The first time i threw old (already had 4 flushes) used up mcycelium in my backyard it grew. it wasn't impressive at all (maybe 4 2 gram shrooms) but it grew.

Get some fresh grain jars going and use the best looking one to do a grain to grain transfer. A year! If you had contamination it would look like decayed dead body by now. I think you have a hell of a chance to resurrect it.

I have done jars after 12 months myself- and they little a lilttle worth than that even. For shit sake I just dumped out the metabs and rinsed with cold water- they started to get their look back and I cased them into a tub and fruited them out fine. Though the tub contamed after the 2nd flush, very quickly.
