Trichocereus help please

I'm wanting to make a clone from my cactus. I don't want to screw this up.
I want to cut it at the red line. Is this ok? What will happen to the main cactus?
Will it continue to grow after it has callused. Also what is the damage marked by the white line?
All help is appreciated.

Nice specimen! It looks as if you already have pups on the bottom and they will continue to grow.

Can't tell what caused the damage, looks fine and healed now.
The red line is a good place to make the cut. If the cactus is in active growth, the cutting will probably continue to grow upwards without roots and might etiolate.
The motherplant may pup from the cut, or it may just decide to accelerate the growth of the pups at the base.
Just make sure to keep the cuts dry and aired out to prevent rot. Good luck and nice cactus.

Thanks alot guys. Thats what I needed to know.
EDIT:: What do I cut this thing with? A hacksaw? Also, do I need to sterilize the blade via alcohol?
Thanks again.

I use a big kitchen knife to harvest Trichos, but a hacksaw should do. Isopropyl or H2O2 never hurts.... just make sure it has evaporated before cutting.

Yeah, I think a very sharp, non-serrated blade is best.
If you use alcohol or peroxide, don't let it be on the blade when you make the cut. I lost a lot of grafts needlessly before learning that.

Try cutting a T. bridgesii monstrose with that...or a really thick Trichocereus cactus...
I'd go with a hacksaw or serrated knife, you don't want to mess up her roots by having to jerk it around...

No. Hacksaw has its place for thick cacti, but I think non-serrated would be best here. Serrated blades cut by jerking back and forth and nonserrated are meant to cut straight through, so that last sentence really doesn't make sense.

Ok no hacksaw then. And its definitely not a bridgesii monstrose. Its a supposed peruvianus. I think I'll use the old Kabar on it.
Thanks for the input.

That's what I was gonna say...
It may be completely inactive.
If you take a really close-up pic of the areoles, I'll tell you what it really is...

We need a close-up of the areoles...
If the spines swell at the point of attachment to the areoles, it's likely a cuzcoensis and completely inactive...

This is about as close up as I can get with my camera. Hope this is close enough for proper identification.

Thanks.

My vote is for Cuzcoensis...but different than most Cuzcoensis I've seen...
It MAY be active...It's hard to say...
