The Acronyms....
    #7884182 - 01/15/08 03:56 PM (16 years, 17 days ago)

NSA, CIA, FBI, GCHQ, MI5, MI6 etc etc.

We've all heard of them.. and a few of us fear them. When people get all paranoid about wiretaps or some other method of infringing on our privacy, the statement is usually retorted to with 'the nsa/fbi/cia have better things to do than bust your neighbourhood crack dealing operation'.

So these agencies all have powers far beyond any of us mere mortals, and access to technology completely unimaginable.. Some people speculate that they (NSA) are able to monitor every transmission in the world.

My question is.. if these agencies don't give a shit about drugs etc, what do they actually do?

I know my local pot man almost certainly doesn't have the FBI following him around..so what do these folks actually get up to?

I can't speak for all the acronyms you posted, but the ones I have dealt with are interested in knowing what other governments are doing/thinking/planning.

Basically they could possibly use computers with software to catch "key words", only problem is there are not enough employees to listen to all of these at one time. So eventually someone would have to go back and kinda skip through them.If you think about the number of people who do illegal things and haven't been caught then there are alot of people to pay more attention to. Who knows what else they are interested in listening to other than drug related conversations. There was an article not long ago admitting to having NSA spy satellites that can watch people in real time. Along with listening in on cell phone calls, land lines, text messages, IM's, and chats.
