Should be a great media circus. It's already getting ugly though.
When McCain gets a vote from a Democrat there, the media says, " Looooooook, McCain can get the democratic vote."
When Paul gets a vote from a democrat there, the media says, " Democrats are trying to sabotage the Republican party by voting for Paul, since their votes are wasted on the dems"
Early word says turn out is horrible, about 10% so far today, 7 Republicans to 1 Democrat coming out. Obama and Edwards are not even on the ballot in Michigan. Only Hillary and Kucinich are for the Dems, and it is an empty win because, they get no delegates.

I'm hearing the first round of exit polls have Romney 35, McCain 29, Huckabee 15, Ron Paul 10, Giuliani 4.

"local Detroit news channels are reporting that McCain is wheels up - he has left Michigan for South Carolina. Romney, meanwhile, is at the Embassy Suites Southfield outside Detroit where his supporters have gathered for a primary party."

I'm glad Romney won this one instead of McCain getting two in a row. It keeps the field split and better open until Super Tuesday.

Bare in mind Paul supporters that the official campaign only ran some radio ads and sent some mailers to Michigan. Paul himself never campaigned there. 4th is pretty good considering that.
Nevada is the only early primary state where he has been spending a lot of time and money.
I'm curious to see what percent of the vote that state gets him compared to the others.
CNN was just talking about how Money matters when it comes to a Super Tuesday sweep. Paul is going into this quarter with near the most to spend on it. Paul has been spending more time and money in delegate rich states like Texas and California.
Delegates is what these guys are after. WV has a primary in May, yet decided to elect their delegates early, yesterday. Paul cleaned up with the most in the state.
Romney is leading with delegates overall now though.
CNN is having fun rubbing it in that Paul has almost as many votes as Rudy and Thompson combined in MI. They said those two should be embarrassed. I think that's more of an insult to Paul then them.

We'll know soon enough.
Correction on West Virginia. He has the most registered delegates there right now. how many will get elected to him remains to be seen on Feb 5 when the state convention will elect 18, and then in may when they will elect another 9 during their primary.
This is what it looks like for delegates elected from out of Iowa, NH and Wyoming so far.
Romney 24 Huck 18 McCain 10 Thompson 6 Paul 2 Hunter 1 Rudy 0

The democratic Party punished Michigan for bumping their Primary up earlier and stripped them of all of their delegates.
The delegates vote for the party nominee in the fall. There was nothing for a democrat to win there. better to spend their time and money campaigning elsewhere.
The following web-link shows how many delegates states give and when their primary /caucus dates are.
In some states like Michigan, SC and Florida, it is winner take all.
Romney wins another 30 tonight!

Right. It cost a lot of money to put your name on the ballot and before that, it can cost money if you have to pay people to get petitions signed to get your name on the ballot.
It's a no return investment. I don't blame them for not wasting the time or money on Michigan.
The cost is one reason for why, you need tall cash to even have a chance at sweeping on Super Tuesday, when 29 states vote.

So how does each party finally pick their winner to represent them? Is it just as simple as how many delegates you get in the end.. OR.... is it more arbitrary than that? Do they just use the votes as a suggestion on how to pick a candidate?

The parties each have their own national Convention in the fall.
The delegates elect the nominee. Not in all cases do they vote for who they were elected to vote for in their states primaries.
In a few rare cases, even the candidate with the most elected delegates did not get the nomination.

I like how Duncan Hunter actually got less votes than the 'Undecided' option.
They literally showed that in a summary
Romney McCain Huckabee Paul Giul Thompson Undecided Hunter
I laughed.

Here is another interesting comparison.
Who would have thought 6 months ago that Kucinich would get almost as many votes as Rudy in a state.
Rudy Giuliani 24,681 Dennis Kucinich 21,688
