Yes it will work just fine

Yes, just follow Doc's WBS tek or another WBS tek. SWIM's, WBS has sunflowers and he just removes them according to Doc's tek. It will work perfect if done properly.

I removed the sunflower seeds first few times, then read that Agar left them in, so I stopped taking them out. Didnt see a difference. What exactly is supposed to be wrong with leaving them in?
That birdseed will work fine, its just expensive if you get it in those little bags. I bought the same thing to see how it worked, then went for the 40lb bags for like $10. Good stuff.

The only reason I take the black seeds out is because when I look at an almost completely colonized cake and notice an off dark color,I tend to get nervous. I start thinking in terms of "Black Mold. No dark seeds, No freak out.

Tahoe I had already put you in the class of people who's posts I consider "very reliable advice". Agar has a bunch of WBS prep posts so it stuck in my mind that he said it. But I think I know what your getting at, some peoples advice doesnt seem to hold as much weight as others, and the reasons for that aren't always logical.
Those seeds can be deceiving. The same thing happened to me, mistaking black sunflower seeds for some kinda contam. It doesnt look like a sunflower seed when its pressed against the glass surrounded by mycelium, it looks like something bad. At least it did to my unexperienced eye. I almost threw about 12 jars out that turned out to be fine!
Out of curiousity, I did some searching as to why people thought the sunflower seeds were bad. Lots of different reasons. I havent experienced any of them, but this is what I found....I read that they rotted faster, slowed colonization, contained more endospores, messed up the moisture content, contam faster, and because they have too much oil. I also saw a few posts that said if you tried to make WBS flour you had to remove the sunflower seeds before grinding else you'd end up with WBS butter. That's never happened to me either.

I think I read somewhere that people thought they were hollow inside, therefore they could harbor contams..?
I'm glad I read this post, no more annoying "wait til they float to the top and strain" crap (btw I'm taking your advice tahoe ).
