Ok guys im a bit excited cos im new to all this and im having loads of fun experimenting, and im also excited as i have used bird seed without the need of a pressure cooker
The other night i decided to make up a substrate using ground up bird seed and vermiculite, and innoculating using a multi spore syring (hawaiian cubensis) 17 days later i have really healthy, fully colonised cakes. I havent fruited them yet so i will post what results i get from that, but i thought i would share this as this is the quickest iv seen any of my cakes grow using multi spore.
What i did; 1. ground up wild bird seed using coffee grinder 2. mixed the ground bird seed with vemiculite (1 part bird seed, 2 parts vermiculite) with water untill no more water could be absorbed 3. Filled jars with the substrate and put into a veg steamer for 90mins. 4. Once cooled, inoculated with multi spore and incubated at 87o
Ill upload some pics later on tonight.
Thanks for listenin guys

How funny, I read a thread last night that made me go out and do that! Just for shits and giggles. I pc'd 4 1/2 pint jars with a WBS/verm mixture done in the same manner as a PF cake. I was preparing 12 quart jars of WBS and said "oh what the hell, lets make some good ol' cakes. I'm gonna knock them up today.

Interesting, however 87F is far to high.
Quote:
I've been saying that for years. My petri dish studies a few years ago showed that cubensis reaches peak linear growth between 75F and 80F, then is flat until 83F, where it starts to slow down. Mycelium at 86F is growing at about 2/3 the speed of mycelium at 80F. In addition, the higher temps tend to stimulate thermophic molds and bacteria.
There's LOT'S of good information in TMC, but that 86F figure is one of the errors. RR
