humidification questions

i think i might have drilled too many holes in my tub, creating too much air flow and possibly drying out the perilite and the cake. how can i be sure im at the desired humidification level. i dont have a hygrometer. is there a way to run water through the perilite again to re-hydrate it like i did in the begining, or will that introduce contams. what kind of things can i look for on the cake as signs of being too dry? before pinning, and after. and when misting, i have heard that you should mist first and then fan so there is not standing water (i think RR said that, im not sure though) and i have also read that you should fan, and then mist. is there any definitive answer to that?
thanks for all the help!

Mist first, then fan. If you built it per the video, you're fine. The perlite will remain moist for six weeks or so. If you live in a desert, or very cold climate and use a lot of heat, I'd run a humidifier 24/7 in the room the terrarium is located. RR

Some things that might work is using a clean fork to move the perlite around a little. I have seen people mist the perlite if it got too dry as well. After first flush you can always resoak while redunking your cakes.
There's no real way to determine your humidity without a hygrometer. A cheap one from a pet store is better than nothing IMO.
You are using a RR style FC? If so make sure it's up on something so air can come up thru the perlite for added humidity.
Use search for ways to determine if they are dry. There's a few different ways.
I believe mist then fan is correct.
Good luck.
oops took me too long to type that. RR got here first.

i was wondering because the top of my perilite seems dry. yeah, im using an RR style FC. i guess misting the perilite could work? i dont have holes in the bottom of the FC. I started drilling them and i got a big crack, so i didn't want to keep trying. they start about an inch up and i have 3- 3 1/2 inches of perilite. does all of that seem ok?

You really need some holes in the bottom. Use a 1/4" drill bit and don't push so hard. It shouldn't crack the tub. Having holes in the very bottom with the tub elevated slightly will increase humidity. RR

ok. it has been one week (maybe 8 days, im not sure), and i have no pinning. and my cake doesnt look like a lot of the ones in the pictures im seeing. im using fine verm, and the mycellum has almost completely covered the cake again over the verm. is that supposed to be happening?
would it maybe be a good idea to put the cake directly on the perilite instead of on the tin foil? would that help the cake get moisture?
