I'm glad I can always count on...

a math test to bring me down when I'm feelin good.

So I'm taking math (college alg) for the first time since high school (last class was about 4 yrs ago). I'm taking it during a winter session (5 1/2 wks) so that I simply get through it as quickly as possible. I couldn't endure a whole semester. Anyways, I want to do well because my college GPA is good. So I've made a genuine effort thus far to understand the material and do all assignments. I've done all the HW, been asking questions in class, and felt pretty secure about the material.

So we had our first test today. At best, I scored around 76%, but probably lower than that. I think I can argue one question to get an extra 4 pts, but it won't change anything. It seems there is always something I will forget. I can never do well on a math test! And I was feeling very confident about this one! FUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKKKK!

My arguable question (math people tell me if this is right):

5. Find the center and radius for the circle x2+ y2=x-2y 1

To which my response was: c (0,0), radius = sq.rt. of (x-2y 1)

The logic being: for the circle (x-h)2 (y-k)2=r2, center=(h,k) and radius=r. Now, if the center is (0,0), and radius is sq.rt. of (x-2y+1), then the equation of the circle is: (x-0)2 (y-0)2= (sq.rt. x-2y 1)2 which is the same as: x2+y2=x-2y+1

Right? Now, naturally a professor would want this expression evaluated, but is this not technically a correct answer?

That one is too complicated for me.

You need to move the x-2y to the other side. Complete the square. Make sure that whatever you add to complete the square on one side you add to the other side to even it out.

Then that should work.

I'm like you. I always understand the concepts but when I go to take a test, I fuck up.
