zombie cake

About a month ago i had a cake that was contaminated and stalled, so i buried it (about 2 inches of dirt on top). We had some rains and now, a week later, it's warm and the ground is still moist. I noticed that there is a patch of myc showing, so it's good to see that burying the cake worked out in my favor.
I wanted to ask to make sure, but currently i'm assuming that the fruits will be ok to consume because it is apparent that the myc and nature beat out the contamination. Is this correct?
Also, do you think the fruits will be fairly large and obvious? It's kind of an open part of the yard between some bushes, and there are lots of people that walk by lawn about 10 feet away. It is totally possible for someone to walk by and see them just by turning their head.
And one more... Should i just leave them where they are, or could i perhaps cut out a section and bring it in for controlled studies or spawing and cloning?
Thanks for your help and information.

Ummmm, it's rather common for mycelium to defeat contams from what I hear. Id leave them how many people will actually know what kind of mushroom they are not to many I would think. It only takes a few days for them to grow, let them go at it then pick them.

alright so it's been a couple of days...
The myc is turning a blush-green color and it looks like the myc has shown up about a foot away as well, it's kinda a cake graveyard in that part so i'm not sure if it's from the same network, or another cake.
Either way i'm stoked! Yeay nature!
What's really funny is that there are snail trails all over ground where the myc is growing. Hilarious that i've got a group of tripping snails all around the garden!
Are the snails being junkies or helpers? Also, it's warming up here and the ground is going to start to dry out, should i water it a bit or do you think the network is large enough to get it's own water/moisture from deep in the ground?
It's not nearly 90% humidity outside so do you think i could/should cover with a plastic sheet to help out?
Thanks

if its getting warm and dry out you should most definitely water them. i dont know about covering them as it might harbor contams? maybe something light and airy. truthfully i havent started my own outdoor patch yet as its to cold.
the shrooms should be safe to eat as long as there is no mold or anything growing on them.

Once you go outside, keep it outside. Nature definitely has a way of killing contams. I put old substrate outside after its spent in the summer and it usually fruits again after a rain.

Now that is interesting. I'll have to try that in the summer.

Fucking hippie snails eating my shit! Oh well, if it fruits, it fruits. If not, then let those damn hippie snails enjoy it.
I might see if i can find some fine (as in small holes) chicken wire to protect them with. Maybe I'll just get a flower pot and turn it upside down. Then I'll be protected from snails, covered for humidity, and have holes in the top/bottom for light and air.

well it looks like i missed the opportunity. It's really wet outside and all the snails had a feast. Any bits of myc that were poking through are turning all green.
I think your right though, i'll just leave the graveyard alone. If i do for some reason get a fruit, i'll try to take a print to see how it comes out.

Copper mesh or tape is supposed to keep them out of your gardens. Place it around the perimeter and it messes with their electrical field when they slide over it they don't like the sensation. At least that's what I have read up on. This is for next time of course.

The snails got to the original patch and it's gone now, but over the last 2 weeks an even bigger wave of white came out in another location. This was pretty big (about 4" diameter and sticking up about .25 of an inch) It really did look like a wave of myc sweeping across the ground.
In any case, i kept snails away from this new spot, and it seemed to be working. But then it stopped raining for a day or so, and now the myc just got all green again.
I don't think that it's humid enough outside for mushrooms to form. It's probably only 40-60%, and I'm wondering if this is this why the myc will only colonize and not fruit? The organism itself seems large enough to be mature and fruit, but it just doesn't start to pin at all, and usually gets all moldy after a few days of exposure above ground.
