Is this Lion's Mane ready for bulk spawn
    #7878714 - 01/14/08 03:05 PM (16 years, 18 days ago)

This jar is already fruiting invitro, but the rye still doesnt look fully colonized. Should I still wait a bit before using to spawn to straw log?

Hmm, I do see some uncolonized rye there.

Lion's Mane has very faint mycelium as you can see. As soon as all of the grain is colonized with the faint mycelium, it should be used for spawning pronto. Or you end up with the culture fruiting invitro just like you're seeing there.

On the other hand you really don't want to expose the grain that's not colonized to open air or bulk substrate. You're kind of in a pickle there to be honest. I'd wait for the rest to hopefully colonize and then would use it. Just remove the thick mushroom tissue on the top of the seed and then use the rest for spawning.

Don't wait too long though. I'd give the jar 2 or 3 more days and would use it. Sometimes there's grain in jars that's pressed up against the walls that doesn't get colonized and still works out fine.

It's the nature of the beast. It's ready to spawn. Next, you'll see what appears to be uncolonized parts of the bulk substrate, but it's still fully colonized. Hericium just seems to have areas of very light and very thick mycelium. This sawdust block is fruiting, but looks only half colonized.
