No thanks. I've seen all that shit here and there and little of it stands up under scrutiny it seems.

I always figured Terence McKenna worked more or less alone, with his "Timewave Zero" theory, to bring 2012 and the Mayan calendar into the modern tripper lexicon. He describes 2012 as the year when the sudden explosion of New Stuff happening (on which humanity merely rides, like a surf) reaches a head and the conscious structure of the universe realigns itself from the system that we (or I, if you're so inclined towards the concept of cosmic unity) are presently familiar with.
The Mayan calendar itself seems like a premise he found handy to contextualize the things he wanted to say.
It's certainly an interesting subject for contemplation, but I really hope no one here stays up at night worrying if the world is really going to end in 2012.
I respect Terence McKenna's views on the subject; I consider him a psychedelics connoisseur, the illegality of whose interests and expertise forced him away from selling drugs and into the herculean task of intellectualizing decades of heavily spaced-out thinking for lectures and books to make a legitimate living. He did a marvelous job.

yea it would be dumb to stay up all night worrying considering if its going to happen then theres nothing we can do about it, staying up all night partying on the other hand... and i would consider myself lucky if i could live to see the end of humanity

when mckenna refers to "most novel moment in time," its supposed to be the most important event in the course of human history, and seeing as his timewave-zero ends after this most novel point, it predicts the end of time - AS WE KNOW IT. What he explains this to possibly be is time travel; time could not be graphed past this point, and it would certainly be the most important event in our history.
Also, traveling faster than the speed of light (IE time travel) would enable us to travel and colonize other galaxies, which matches with one of nostradamuses predictions.. something about the world going into two factions, one leaving to the constelation Cancer, the other one to.. capricornius? I didnt pay much attention to the nostradamus stuff lol.

The Mayans are all dead.. (Well not all of them, but you should be able to get the picture.)
Think about that? They found this old calender system, and one man or so managed to decipher it.. Then he could see in their calender, the same predictions as modern astronomers have made, and that it is precises even today.. (..thousand of years after they made it.)
However, the calender is carved out of in a circular rock. Meaning they did not ran out of rock, as they chose the size of the circle, based on observation of the stars, aid by aliens, or what not people believe. But, it ends, just like our Gregorian calender, and starts over again..
This "end of time" or "new year/cycle" if you will, is then predicted by the Mayans, via the stone calender they left behind..
This again, has been hyped out of proportion, till the point where you know it now.
But it really could be as simple as a galactic completion of some cycle. Most I spoken with and hear, say it is the sun they measured as the "grand/biggest cycle", and that they took the sun, when it is at the closest possible to our galaxe's centre, as starting point for the calender, meaning, then sun will return to the "starting point" at 2012 or 2011 or who ever you trust the most. ;p
(Few agrees in the exact translation from Mayan till the Gregorian calender, and I personally think that is cause the Gregorian is so badly flawed. )
