Fun with Milo! 3

I decided to write up how I prep my milo.. and I have this thing about taking lots of pictures, so making a pictoral is always fun. Anything to help others gain the feeling of accomplishment one can get on their first successful grow. I belive a lot about having your grain preppared correctly is how you wash your grains and ever more so, timing. Sure, about 20+ things also chime in when you think what can go wrong with grain prep, but imoe I see most grain jars failed due to water content issues. Also, this comes from the mindset that you have done the pf-tek and understand how to inoculate. Anything in the smaller font is random information I found in crop manuals online that just sounded cool.
: Plantae Division: Magnoliophyta Class: Liliopsida Order: Poales Family: Poaceae Genus: Sorghum What is Milo? "...Farmers on the hot, dry plains from Texas to South Dakota grow and use grain sorghum like Corn Belt farmers use corn. Large acreages of grain sorghum are also grown in Africa and Asia in areas where the climate is too hot and dry for corn.
During the past 25 years, the grain sorghum acreage in the U.S. has ranged from 15 to 18 million acres per year. Grain sorghum acreage is somewhat greater than acreages for oats and barley, but considerably less than the land area planted to corn, wheat, and soybeans.
In cooler, more humid regions, corn is usually a better choice than grain sorghum, but renewed interest in grain sorghum occurs whenever hotter and drier than normal growing seasons are experienced..."Alternative Field Crops Manual

Scan through your milo. take out stuff thats not milo. Most extra stuff wont cause you any problems, but I want to keep everything consistant. Mesure out how much you would like to prepare; I go for 1:2, so I'll soak three quarts of milo, in the end giving me almost 6 qts of milo.
"...Before the 1940s, most grain sorghums were 5-7 feet tall, which created harvesting problems. Today, sorghums have either two or three dwarfing genes in them, and are 2-4 feet tall. While there are several grain sorghum groups, most current grain sorghum hybrids have been developed by crossing Milo with Kafir. Other groups include Hegari, Feterita, Durra, Shallu, and Kaoliang..."
Pre-soak:

This step I use to wash the grains quickly before they start their long soak. You can see a great deal of "dirty" in the water after just a small time of soaking and aggitation. Stiring them up helps a lot.
Stir it up:
"...The grain has more protein and fat than corn, but is lower in vitamin A..."

Pre-Rinse: Drain and rinse for at least five min and let it start on the long soak. Hot water is great, as long as its not burning you- then its too hot. So don't do that. For soaking, you want to use cold to room temp water.
"...and is the "fifth most important cereal crop grown in the world..."

24 Hour Soak then Rinse: Just like it sounds, cold-room temp water for a day. As the soak goes on, the grains will asorbe and drink of some of the water, just replace some of the lost water every eight hours or so.

Steep: Some in the community say this is not needed. Some say it is. I belive it can be done either way. When I steep (I try not to say simmer, because thats way to hot...) I have much more success with my whole grow. Jars I do not steep are always on the iffy side. Deciding factor for me is what am I useing to inoculate and how much.
Fill the water level just an inch or two above the grain. Turn the heat on low, stirring gently every min or so until the water is hot to the touch, turn off the heat. Let it sit for 30min, still stirring every 5 min. Then drain and rinse with cold water. Let them drain in the sink for another 30min after that- then they are ready to be loaded into jars, bags or whatever you can come up with.

PC at 15PSI for 90min: Load up some bags or qt jars and fire up the PC. When its done, and you are removing your jars, be sure to shake them up well. Then when they have cooled down (core temps can be hotter than outside temps) they will be ready for inoculation. Make sure you shake them well before and after. During colonization, shake them at 25% 50% and 75%. So about three times in their run.

Innoc and wait: And now we wait. I myself inncubate my jars at room temp, 68-74. I think a good rule of thumb is if its warm enough for you while your nakid- its warm enough for them to grow. Like that logic?
The warmer they are the faster they will grow (to a point of corse) Anything over 80 is putting you at risk of being to hot. (core temps can be +5) And honestly, I belive a STEADY temp over a harder to maintain high temp is better for the longrun.

... and wait:

From here you can use your jars anyway you wish. You could make more jars and grain to grain transfer. You could add some vermiculite and remove some of the grain and try some invitro. Or just spawn to substrate and spawnbags or a new medium like Millet, rye or something you havn't had a chance to use before.
You can just use less grain and add some verm and try invitro. Peice of cake.

I hope this helps some of you. If you have any quesions or comments feel free to say something. If you think I need to add something, lemme know. I get a 95 out of 100 jars successful when I do these runs with multispore. I have had 100% success useing LC and grain to grain transfers with milo. I'll just let the pics show the results.

I don't know if the color in the berries matter- but I havn't seen them all one color. Though, the really red ones do bleed pink that looks like lipstick in the late stages. But its just the pigment in the grains, so no worries if you notice that.
Yeah, I shake every 25% of the way.
At the feed store down the street its 30 cents a lbs for milo and 25 cents for wheat. WBS/millet about 35 cents a lbs. Bulk is usally cheaper; a nickle or two a lbs. And its everywhere and easy to find.
I find it less sticky that wheat and rye, and much more equally proportioned in size unlike wbs which has very random grain placement.

Its not your city that matters, more your state. I live in a metro area also, havn't seen a place that didn't have it.
Wheat is my first love. Done hundreds of wheat jars. The berries are very uniform with milo- like millet. Structual integrity is much strong that wheat or rye. "They don't give under pressure" Wheat/rye has a softer outer layer and it gives a little.

Milo is the only thing I use. I think its a great grain, I mean 50Lbs of Whole Grain Milo for $8 from the feed store is not that bad IMO. Also all shrooms Ive grown have been nice & strong/potent.

Thanks a lot guys, i'll be improving write up itself over time and you will be able to view the newer versions in my journal. Been working on a mono dunk/re-hydrating tek right now that should help people trying to water.

I just followed this tek. My jars turned out looking like they got over cooked. Take a look at the picture bellow. They are dark brown no longer a golden color. I have gotten pre sterile milo bags from vendors before and they looked normal color. Did these cook, burn and dry out some how?

i have a question, i am following everything for sorghum but it seems that half of the bags get colonized and half are rotten or have that botulism smell so i have to toss them, am i not innoculating them correctly, i have a flow hood etc , some runs all bags are perfect some runs half go bad

Working out for you? So after inoc your getting smelly bags? How big are your bags? are you using Lc? multispore?
Personally, I don't ever use straight milo with bags.. How big are the bags?
Like what other guy said, to much hydration.
