good existentialist novels
    #7863060 - 01/11/08 12:43 AM (16 years, 2 months ago)

does anyone have any suggestions for some good existentialist novels? I am not that concerned with technically being existentialist but I am looking for something with that style.
Franz Kafka's The Metamorphosis is one of my favorite books. I want to find something similar.

What does everyone think of writers like Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, etc.

Camus is not existentialist, you are thinking of Sartre. I enjoy Kafka, The Castle being my favorite novel of his. Camus' the Plague is pretty interesting, but kind of boring honestly. The novel still has a lot to say however

Although Camus might not technically be existentialist I think he is. His style in my opinion is close enough. The Plague was very slow paced, but it did have its moments. I really enjoyed The Stranger by Camus.
I actually have not read The Castle, I might have to go check that one out.

"existentialism and humanism" by sartre is a good introduction to the philosophy of existentialism.

as for an actual existentialist novel, my favorite by sartre is "no exit" which is where the slogan "hell is other people" comes from.

You could probably find No Exit online. It's worth a read. Very amusing.

My signature sucks.
