Yea, about three-quarters of a fluid ounce of acidic water each time through the quart of xylene.

Powdered cactus irritates my nose and throat, so I throw dry skins into the blender with some water (around 50g to 3 cups). And, I always use distilled water.

I'm glad to see your still patient enough to answer questions and such 04281969. Once again thanks for the intro into chemistry. I've came a long way since I first made mescaline .

when i skin my cactus and let the skins dry i noticed on some spots on the underside of the skin it goes blood red only on particular pieces the temp is around 105 in the sun probably hotter have you noticed this b4 and do you know if you can double up on powder cactuc without changing the recipe would the 29ml of citric soulution be more pure the reason i ask is the issue with the lye that shits hot... in short i think im gonna collect 100grams of the red pieces and try to make it let me know how much you have expirimented with different parts of the cactus so i dont waist time

You don't need to dry the skins, just throw them into the blender and adjust the water you would use to dilute the lye. No biggie.
Yea, lye solution gets hot. Patience is a virtue with mescaline.
I've noticed some red discoloration in skins before. I don't think it is anything to worry about. Mescaline is a very hearty compound.
This recipe is a good place to start from and it should work well with most cacti. Experiment and see what works best for the specific cactus that you have.

So I am nearing step 3 of this extraction. Currently, I have the NaOH-xylene-cactus solution doing its thing, and it will be ready in 5 hours.
Instead of citric acid, I am using Hydrochloric acid, because I have it on hand.
I just want to check my calculations to be sure I am using the right amount of HCl.
So 2g Citric acid/191.124g/mol gives 0.01041 mols Citric Acid. So mols of HCl = Citric acid so mols HCl = O.01041 mols. Now, since I have concentrated 12M HCl, 0.01041mols/12M gives 0.867 mL 12M HCl.
Also regarding this tek... isn't putting concentrated (in this case, ~2.5M) NaOH into glass a bad idea b/c it etches glass...?

be careful though wonkier
each citrate can link up to two mescaline molecules
where as HCL can't. (maybe? need confirmation on this but I remember reading this somewhere in the thread)
someone else might be able to help you more specifically and directly..
so don't put much stock into what i'm suggesting but I don't think it is safe to assume that moles HCl = moles citrate

If we look at the mescaline structure, we see that upon addition of HCl, the mescaline will be protonated at the amine group. Since there is only one site of protonation, giving a +1 formal charge on the amine, the Cl- with a -1 formal charge must be a 1 to 1 ratio for charge balance.
I'm not sure about any of this actually... are the three CH3-O-ring groups acidic?
Ah I'm getting confused now... citrate has a 3- charge... it would link up three mescaline molecules then??

Step by step procedure for freeze precipitation:
1: Take your solution of acid & mescaline 2: Put it in a cold ass fucking freezer 3: Don't peak 4: When gorgeous little snowflakes start falling out of the solution, take it out of the freezer 5: Pour into a large flat glass dish and leave out until it is dry 6:

has anyone tried this ..... correct me if im wrong..... citric has 4 binding points to alkaloids hydrochloric has 1 but the say hydrochloric gives you a more pure product couldnt you use the citric to find the alkaloids and then add a drop of hydrochloric to to srip the alkaloids off the citric and then wash point being that citric finds alkaloids faster and collects more but hydrochloric gives you a more pure product just a theory
