well, you're not supposed to swamp the perlite. it needs to have contact with the air so that the moisture can evaporate. just use less water.

Place the perlite in a strainer and let water run through it from the faucet. When the perlite has been throughly rinsed, let drain for a minute or two, then dump into your terrarium. Enough water will be stuck to the perlite to give 99% humidity for three weeks or so. Repeat this process after each flush or two. Standing water of any kind will actually lower humidity.

hygrometer is probably off. Are you doing cakes or casings? With casings that RH is fine. with cakes you want a little higher..

I have a test (i.e. empty) FC setup going w/ perlite, a bubble wand, and a double air pump (where both outlets are going into the wand). I have tried both the RR method (outlined above) and also hyphae's (IIRC he said that as long as 1 inch of wet perlite is exposed to air, you can have standing h20). Sadly, neither method is getting me into the 90s AFA Rh is concerned. I really don't get it either. I have around 2.5 - 3 inches of perlite in an 18 gallon sterilite container.

EDIT: I am now trying a 'saran wrap'-type lid to verify it isn't that. Also, two seperate hygrometers have been used to test.

Dump the perlite out into a colander, let the water drain out. Empty all water from the bottom of your terrarium. Dump the perlite back in and watch your humidity climb.

Also, you may want to consider buying a real hygrometer that actually works well and is reliable. Like a Masons Red Liquid Hygrometer.

Calibrate your hygrometers, and get rid of the air pump and bubble wands because they're lowering your humidity.

Two inches of damp perlite with no standing water will produce 99% humidity in a terrarium. This has been proved by growers for many years. Personally, I don't like any standing water because it provides a breeding ground for bacteria and other creatures such as gnats, while lowering humidity because any perlite that is underwater is useless. Other successful growers disagree of course, but the above is based on my personal experience.

Damp perlite will remain damp and will continue to provide humidity for several weeks in a terrarium. Rinse, drain and re-apply between flushes when you clean out your terrarium anyway.

By adding more water you actually are lowering the RH through less exposed surface area. If using only 1.5" of perlite then I'm with RR here and drain out any excess water ASAP. When using standing water in conjuction with the perlite you will want it cleaned by either the use of H2O2, iodine (1-2 drops per gallon) or a weak bleach solution (1:200) all these work fine. IME over the years any moist climate can be a breeding ground for bacteria, I personally have never had any problems but then again I keep everything cleaned and disinfected. I'd go with RR's advice as long as it is working for you.
