Shroomery nod from Fungus Fair

The woman giving the lecture on poisonous and hallucinogenic mushrooms gave a positive reference to our beautiful shroomery, using it to get a photo (thanks to angryshroom) and some information.
So you might expect some new members from there.
The exact expression was something like, "I expected it to be too hippie-dippy for my tastes, but it actually has a lot of good photos and information. Plus, you can go there and ask questions."
EDIT: She obviously wasn't browsing OTD.

Nice! Where was the Fungus Fair held?

I was there both days.... Along with fellow shroomerite Alan Rockefeller. I thought we were the only ones.
Debbie Viess (Amanita Rita) was the woman who presented. She encouraged me to come to her presentation, but I got caught up at the Identification Table. Glad to hear my plugging for Shroomery is finally starting to pay off. Alan has also been spreading the word.

The other thing to push is for shroomerites to go to these things.
CureCat, have you noticed that the ones that go to the various mushroom fairs seem to learn how to ID much more quickly and better than those who don't?
Happy mushrooming!

Well, in short, yes. However, I think the real question is whether it is cause or correlation?
It seems that those Shroomerites who attend these events tend to be the type that are interested in learning how to identify mushrooms in the first place, rather than simply relying on others to answer their questions and asking "are these shrooms the poison ones or the good ones?"

You're right about the type of person and their desire to learn more. And those personality traits are, I think, the most important things for a person to have if they are going to learn to identify mushrooms well.
On the other hand, I know I've learned a lot of odd things that I've never seen in any books by going on forays or hanging around during identification with knowledgeable people.
Also, I think it helps people learn faster, because you get immediate feedback on your guesses.
Happy mushrooming!

Totally! I love arguing identification with old guys!!!
But really, the more people you meet, the more knowledge is shared with you. I've certainly learned a lot from the hardcore mycophiles.
When you get that many minds together focused on one thing, you can't help but pick up valuable information!
